40 and body slowly coming apart at the seams

Reluctantadult · 15/01/2023 10:01

Just here to complain and see if anyone else is in the same boat! I am 40 and I feel like my body is starting to fall apart in many small ways! I am lucky I don't have major health concerns, but will I slowly come apart at the seams?! I'm going for slightly lighthearted but also serious 😆

I've got prolapsed discs that are currently giving me bad knee pain. Getting my shoes on is a personal challenge.

The insides of my ears have swollen up for some reason, it's really quite painful!

I've had athletes foot for over a year. Will I be using cream forever?!

Same with piles!

And now I've got a sty in my eye.

I used to be fairly fit, run every week, did sprint triathlons, at the moment I can't even walk the dog! Honestly wondering what I'll be like at 60...

My advice to anyone in their 40s is exercise, exercise, exercise. It will pay off in the long run. Also now is the time to really look after your teeth. Think of the money you might spend on hair and beauty stuff (if you do). Spend the same on your teeth. Go private so that you can get care on top of the basic NHS stuff.

👍👍👍

Ooo @User4775433 which cherry extract do you take?

AlienatedChildGrown · 16/01/2023 18:54

HaroldeVwilliam · 16/01/2023 18:01

@AlienatedChildGrown did you shift/ reduced your dowager's hump?

Started to at least stop the rot when I spent less time hunch over the iPad indulging my more neurotic aspects, with daily short walks outside, that turned into much linger ones. Then I started to do a 10 minute set of back/neck/shoulder exercises. I was doing them for persistent pain and tension in those areas. But I noticed it was straightening up my emerging hump. So upped it to twice daily. And that was even better.

I’d be lying if I said vanity was part of it, I was horrified when I saw a photo. All I could see was my hump. But what probably keeps me going is the pain relief. I used to take painkillers every couple of days or so for tension headaches, shoulder, neck or upper back pain. Rarely do now. If I feel a twinge I move the exercise session (done in my chair, cos am still a lazy beastie) from where I stuck it in my plan to Right Now. Work permitting. Most of the time I release whatever is twanging and don’t need to neck paracetamol. Down to maybe twice a month for painkillers. Depending on increasingly random periods.

47 over here & yes it's quite shocking how it hits!

.I'm trying, yoga, swimming, walking, HRT, much less booze and vitamin D.

Need to up all the exercise frequency though, I've stalled a bit due to stressful life experiences.

Reluctantadult · 16/01/2023 18:58

Thanks @AlienatedChildGrown !@AlienatedChildGrown ! That's kind. I've booked the physio, arranged to meet a friend at the swimming pool on Thursday and ordered a costume! Wish I was the other side of the alps!!!!

You wait till 60!

gravyriceandchips · 16/01/2023 19:23

I've just had to buy piles stuff. Ffs.

My greys are now at the sides a bit.

My right hip aches and my right leg but this may be my mattress I'm not sure. 40 for me was the point my face started to say fuck it.

Reluctantadult · 16/01/2023 19:36

@Spanielsarepainless that's what I'm worried about! Maybe I need a spaniel... DLurcher might disagree...

@gravyriceandchips that's weird, I thought the piles was just random, but maybe it's 'a thing'?!

OK here I am to join the aches and pains gang!

However..... at 65 I am very lucky that I don't actually have any aches and pains YET (touch wood). I do think a lot of our health situations are inherited and most of the good health is down to good luck also.

I'm 65. I don't need glasses, I walk about 5k every day except Sunday which is lazy lump day. I stick to the intermittent fasting thing, which is good for avoiding snacking after dinner. I do break out of it now and then, but overall it is routine for me. I don't smoke or drink alcohol, but I like chocolate (a lot!), but try to limit it best I can.

If I am ever feeling low or fed up, I list out all the things that are great in my life and all the things I don't have, such as diabetes, heart disease (I have Afib but that is not life threatening and my underlying heart condition is fine, my mother had it too), obesity, arthritis, COPD, hypertension, etc. In fact the only things that went wrong for me were the wonky heart rhythm and colonic polyps that could have been cancerous but weren't.

The only supplement I take is a multivitamin and Vit D. Flax seed on my porridge every day too + protein powder.

Keep moving, keep the bowels moving are two things that work for me. Sorry if TMI, but I am actually blessed and very glad that I am.

At my age there is no doubt that things will slow up gradually, and who knows what's around the corner, but I am doing as much as I can now, just in case!

gravyriceandchips · 16/01/2023 20:12

I think it's a thing for some of us unlucky ones. Same as sone need hrt some just breeze through it.

Literally started it tonight. Put the little thing in my bum away we go lol. Can't do any harm anyway.

I can't even be arsed to name change.

You just get older and discover these things about your body that just start not being as good that you took for granted when you were a bit younger.

gravyriceandchips · 16/01/2023 20:14

I agree @Leadbypencils

Same with skin and face creams. I think it's genes and diet and water

You wouldn’t if you saw the blanket of fog we are under 😂

You are making a great start. If you need us to yell motivating encouragement at you as you pootle forward into better than now, just shout. Pootlers Unite to rage, rage, wriggle out of damp swimming costumes and take foggy walks with unruly dogs towards feeling better than we have for a while.

"used to be fairly fit" why aren't you now?

I'm a few years old than you and have noticed a definite decline. It's only served to motivate me further and highlighted the importance of a decent diet and plenty of exercise. My hormones are wonky - it's either peri or 3rd Covid jab and Covid that have kicked them out. This has made it all worse.

I've read up on diet specific to my age and made various adjustments. Basically even more fruit and veg and making an effort to avoid processed stuff and booze. I've put a bit of weight on which I'm 'trying' to shift, it doesn't drop off like it used to 😡

I've become very dependent on a very gentle 20min stretching/ foam rollering routine once DS is asleep. I do it with the telly on. It's not tiring. If I don't do it either my hips, low back, neck or shoulders become very painful and my mobility drops to that of an arthritic 90 year old. This never used to be an issue in my 20's and 30's 😡

I have raced bikes (bicycles) on and off for years. But stopped when DS was small (now 6). I'm sick of this decline and feeling 'old,' and getting fat and creased. So I've entered a stack of races, drawn up a training programme and excited about this. It's keeping me motivated and I feel much better about myself, which was the whole point I guess. Still moving about like an arthritic 90 year old if I don't do my evening stretch. I need a lot more rest than I used to when I was younger. It's all very amateur (the races), I'm not gonna win... but I don't give a stuff. It's totally changed my outlook.

Sounds good. How old are you?

I take a wellwoman max multi-vit that I think helps, I think it's probably the vitamin D that does the most but I will keep it up. I started taking cherry extract for inflammation and that was a game changer. It made a massive difference so they can definitely work - and I was always sceptical!

Could you possibly share which cherry extract you use?

CoQ10 · 16/01/2023 20:56

Well, I have actually taken a few different brands - I messed around with the dosage a bit to see what I needed, I am taking these just now (and have been for the 18 months or so....

www.amazon.co.uk/Montmorency-Cherry-4000mg-Extract-Concentrate/dp/B0B3NDN11D/ref=pd_lpo_1?pd_rd_w=7v24E&content-id=amzn1.sym.2d229339-2f42-4596-a90d-b81a4f52d6d3&pf_rd_p=2d229339-2f42-4596-a90d-b81a4f52d6d3&pf_rd_r=NTZPSVH2N9FZTEPMDNZN&pd_rd_wg=tJ2a8&pd_rd_r=fce2ec9a-cf42-46a9-bbe2-cb08b968e839&pd_rd_i=B0B3NDN11D&psc=1

Previous to that I was on the Holland and Barratt one... which was good but the dosage was too low for me and it was a bit expensive imo. I think it was this one....

www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/holland-barrett-cherry-effect-capsules-60030409

I've tried the black cherry one from H&B as well (because it was cheaper and I thought I would try it) - I don't think it worked as well for me as the montmorency cherry - But different things will work for different people.

I've also tried other ones, I can't remember which brands though! I remember the first brand I tried disappeared and I worried about that - but I have got decent results from every brand I have chosen.

I hope this helps - it might be a bit jumbled but wanted to post before I went to bed, I'm not an expert and I am not sure about recommending brands but the top one is what I am happy with at the moment and I will keep taking them.

Sometimes I will have cherries/juice instead of the capsules but 95% of the time I rely on the capsules. Thank you, Goodnight!

This thread is very relatable. I don't think there's a day that goes by where I don't feel like absolute shit as soon as I wake up.

I used to be super fit and I'm coasting off that so I still look ok. But I've got horrendous arthritis now and I'm absolutely terrified of setting off a flare up /struggling with severe fatigue so I don't do anything anymore. Still paying for my bloody gym membership though...

AlienatedChildGrown · 17/01/2023 09:46

@HaroldeVwilliam @StarInTheHeavens

I went off to see if I could find something youtube similar to my anti-hump neck/shoulder/back chair stretches. But got distracted by kitten videos. My kryptonite.

The specific guided routine I use is in Fabulous, unfortunately in the premium version. But I think they let me try the premium for free for a week, so if you have a burner email you can sign up on the site and try the neck thing to see if it helps. Do it often enough and you’ll probably learn it in a week 😁

If they no longer offer a free trial of premium I can PM you an invite for a month’s free trial. I got five invites with my annual membership and I’ve only used 2.

When inside you need to look for GUIDED Click that and a pic comes up with all the categories. Scroll down until you see STRETCH. Then click chair stretch. Pic attached so you know what you’re looking for.

I’ve got something for the “feel like shit right after waking”. I totally get how horrible it is, I felt so shit I just basically didn’t get up until 2pm for ….. well let’s not dwell on how long that went on for.

Take fancy pants teabag that isn’t really tea. If you can get them the ones I marked in yellow, they are ridiculously lovely. The red ones are from LIDL and they are nice even for me, a “take that fucking horrible herbal fake tea away from my nose/mouth” type.

Find jug or Big Mug. Lidded if cat containing household. Stick not really tea teabag in jug/big mug. Fill with cold water from tap (if tap water safe, if not bottled water). Walk jug/big mug (and a glass if using jug) to bedside table or nearest equivalent. Leave there with tea bag in all night.

Upon waking. Even if it’s stupid o’clock and you’ll be sleeping another hour or so. Drink the nice flavoured water. ALL OF IT. Sip or glug according to personal preference.

I had no idea how much of my body’s water I was losing overnight. And I can’t drink loads of water before bed or I’ll be running to the loo all night. So a notable chunk of my feeling like shit on waking was down to dehydration. But a week of the Nice Water Upon Waking made a huge difference.

With the added bonus that my jug is half a litre. So a rather frantic bladder forces me out of bed and avoids the morning feeling like shit caused by my “I’m a mole, and I’m not coming out of my hole” tendency to huddle under the duvet until half the day has gone. Only to emerge in the PM to go straight online to start work with my head all befuddled.

Apologies. Will post when Telecom Italia decides it wishes to play ball and give me something close to the minimum internet speeds I pay them for.

No issues getting up here. My 5 year old appears by bed at 6:30am on the dot aka the crack of dawn! Personalised alarm clock.

What is cherry supposed to be good for?

I swear these vit B12 are helping when just swallowing tablets ones before were not www.amazon.co.uk/B12-Complex-Absorption-Sublingual-Bioactive-Methylcobalamin
A good 5-10min yoga stretch in the morning and before bed helps me too. There was a good quote on a pod cast I heard recently saying it’s not the exercise that’s hurting your body it’s the 8-10hrs a day sitting down which does the damage and the more you can move the better your feel.

FrostyBits · 17/01/2023 12:08

@AlienatedChildGrown laughing at your pic and notes underneath 😂😂 but taking note as I feel shit on waking (and many of the other things on this post!!)
