Don't want to sit in A&E for hours

Dd is 12. on Wednesday she tripped up the step at school and hit her shin . She said it hurt for about 5 mins then the pain went and she forgot about it. On Thursday the pain came back but not overly bad. Slightly worse on Friday.

Now on Saturday she says she's getting sharp shooting pains and is painful when she moves it . Or if it's touched . But she is managing to walk with a limp.

She said pain killers are not working. When I asked her about pain between numbers 1-10 10 being the worst she said 7. I asked again about 90 min after giving her pain killers and she said 9. . She's not crying or in distress. She let's out a little cry when she knocks it or moves to get up.

So I'm not sure if we need to go to A&E or not . Of course I will take her if really needed. But I know its going to be at least a 9 hour wait. I have other children as well who i can't get child care for who have special needs so that makes it harder. I also don't drive so that makes it harder to .

I'm thinking to see how she is over night then go A&E early morning if need be

Give 111 a call. There might be a minor injuries unit that they can book you into, they’re usually less hectic than A&E

Coffeellama · 14/01/2023 17:50

What have 111 said about it?

Sucessinthenewyear · 14/01/2023 17:52

No one wants to go to A and E. If there isn’t a minor injuries near you still open then you are going to have to go and get it checked. The longer you leave it on a Saturday night, the longer the wait will be.

I had a similar injury a few years ago where I fell and banged my shin on the edge of a step. Fine at first although huge bump, but after a few days was absolute agony. I went to the GP and he thought it was because ligaments had been torn off the bone and that they were starting to heal up causing the pain. I told him I was worried it was broken but he said I would be unable to walk on it at all if it was.
It took a while for it to feel better but it did eventually all calm down. I did have to rest, ice and elevate it quite a lot.
I'm obviously not giving you medical advice as all situations are different but just thought my story might reassure you slightly?
Have you tried calling 111?

My son got a football injury, kick to the shin. Was in pain as your daughter describes. Grandma took him to a&e, didn’t even X-ray it and sent him home. I took him back after a further week and they were going to send him home again. I persisted so they x-rayed with an eye roll at me. Fractured leg. Walking on it for 2 weeks. It’s a myth they won’t be able to walk on a broken leg. He even tolerated it being touched. I’d take her to be on the safe side

I was thinking similar to this. She seems to be able to walk with a limp . She moans when she's moves it but not massively. And the dog just jumped on her although she let out a swear shouty word it's not a continuous pain.

I have not called 111. To be honest I have always found them to be not very helpful they just tell people to go to A&E.

That’s really not all they do, personally I think you’d be daft to go to a&e without calling them first. They may advise she can wait till Monday and see the GP for one thing, or may book an out out of hours appointment if they think she needs it.

I agree. I had a broken fibula for months and was running 10k the night before I went to hospital and got put in plaster.

Notwashingup · 14/01/2023 18:28

Have been to A & E recently. Took a flask, sandwich, biscuits, fully charged phone and book. If you go, go prepared.

Rahrahrahraah · 14/01/2023 18:31

Is there another parent at home? After far too many a&e experiences, my tip would be to leave it for tonight, then get her up at 4.30am (awful I know)and take her in then when it's quiet.

(Obvs see if there's a minor injuries etc available first)

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 14/01/2023 18:36

Do you not have a walk in for none emergencies you can take her to tomorrow?

you need dc to be seen.

in my dc case it turned out to be a chipped tibia and needed a cast & rest to heal.

Hellocatshome · 14/01/2023 19:06

If you can um and ah about going to A&E then generally speaking you don't need to go. Call 111 and they may get you an appointment at a primary care for an X Ray

helford · 14/01/2023 19:13

I'd give it a day or two, try some ice and elevation, chances are its a bruised bone, which can be very painful but there is nothing they can about it.

Then look at a MIU on Monday/Tuesday if its still very painful.

Pinkmagic1 · 14/01/2023 19:15

I would dose her up with paracetamol tonight and take her to the walk in centre as soon as it opens in the morning, if there is one near you.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 19:27

If you can get a GP appointment, they can arrange an outpatient appointment for an x-ray for her.
That was what I have been told (being stoic with a potentially broken foot and avoiding A&E too).

So he walked on a fractured tibia??

urrrgh46 · 14/01/2023 20:05

@Fordian i can believe that. My brother "hurt" his ankle playing 5 a side football 10 days before his wedding (he was usually a rugby player so pretty though tbf). Anyway after 3 days - hobbling around on it he finally went to A&E. which resulted in Emergency surgery for a complex ankle fracture. He had to cancel his honeymoon and wasn't even allowed to bare any weight on the leg for several weeks.

urrrgh46 · 14/01/2023 20:05

*tough

CaptainCallisto · 14/01/2023 21:16

I, too, spent three days walking (well limping) around on a fractured tibia after tripping up the stairs running for a train. I went to get it checked in the end because the pain was getting progressively worse, rather than better.

Gemmanorthdevon · 14/01/2023 21:23

There are out of hours Drs! I've always found 111 to be helpful and many times they have simply booked me an appointment for the out of hours GP based up at the hospital, often working next to A&E. You may have a similar service? Or at least get the peace of mind to know nn ok to leave till Monday?

serenghetti2011 · 14/01/2023 21:37

I think until you can get childcare for your other kids you’re not going to be able to take her anywhere, you can make sure she’s comfortable with painkillers until tomorrow, prop her leg up on a pillow and just keep her comfy. Pain scores are generally done 0-10 (10 being the worst pain you’ve ever felt in the past and 0 being a normal day without pain) or you could Google smiley faces etc which are appropriate for children.

perhaps phoning 111 for advice first then see what they say. It’s hard having no support or back up for childcare I hope your daughter is ok and you find a suitable solution for gettin her seen

PartySock · 14/01/2023 21:41

If you have a minor injuries near enough to get to, the wait is likely to be significantly less.

Sunnyday777 · 14/01/2023 23:03

@Fordian Yes, doctor even said to be aware of future injuries as he has a high pain tolerance.
