DD (5) has a really sore lip - any ideas?

DD is usually stoic about illness and little injuries but her bottom lip is so sore that she's quite upset.

It's been 2 days.

There's not a lot to see. It's maybe slightly red and slightly swollen but I've had a good look and can't see anything of note.

Can anyone suggest what it could be so I can try and treat it?

Maybe try a dose of piriton. I get sore lips but with nothing to see when I've been in contact with an allergen.

Thanks. I don't know why I didn't think to do that! DD has an egg allergy and her tummy was a bit iffy on Wednesday so I wondered then if she'd been in contact with egg.

Maybe the start of a cold sore? They don’t look like much for the first couple of days but can cause pain and a tingly feeling like your skin in crawling - then the blisters appear. Keep on eye on it and try to get her not to touch her lips.

This has occurred to me and I'm obviously hoping desperately for DD that it isn't.

I'm immunocompromised so selfishly could also do without being introduced to cold sores for the first time!

If it's chapped rather than the allergy, blistex relief cream is amazing. They discontinued it for a time but it's back now. Needs to be the one in the little metal tube with red lid. It's known as stingy cream in our house as it does sting initially when you put it on but works very quickly where as a lot of other balms don't work at all or can make it worse. It even helps with cold sores

You should know within the next couple of days if it is a coldsore. If it is, what with you being immunocompromised and not ever having had the virus, and it being your child’s first attack, I’d try to get advice from a gp or failing that, a pharmacist.

Sounds like impetigo.

OhBitchPeas · 14/01/2023 12:23

Another vote for impetigo.

Or hand, foot, mouth if she's had a dodgy tummy.

have you got a pic?

Llovecookies · 14/01/2023 12:27

Could be Impetigo (strep A), I'd take her to a pharmacy as she may need antibiotics.
