Neighbour installed camera and blinding light

Fulll disclosure, I can’t stand my neighbour. We live in a terrace with tiny gardens all on top of each other and everything she does grates on me. I try to live and let live as I know we must be annoying too.

But the latest thing has made me really cross.

They’ve just installed a camera high and to the side of their door so I know it’ll be able to record my comings and goings, a blinding security light and a ring doorbell. I don’t know if it will record audio, I hope not.

I know it’s perfectly legal and there’s nothing I can do but it’s really upset me.

I don’t know why I’m posting, just want a moan I suppose. I’m not really asking a question here… and it’s not AIBU so I’m not asking that either.

Pretty sure both a camera and light have to be set appropriately.

your problem will be proving it I think.

whilst you might not want to get into a tit for tat, can you install some kind of screening to reduce the camera and light impact on your comings and goings?

Sympathies.
I have a neighbour like that.
It really niggles, doesn't it? But you let so much go because you don't want a row.

It’s at the front. - I checked the rules and as there’s no expectation of privacy so absolutely nothing I can do. It’s at the front door with no way to screen really.

I’m just going to have to suck it up but it’s just another annoyance to add to the myriad of gripes I have against her. Petty I know! I love most of my other neighbours. I just hope she gets bored finding new ways to spend her money (always, always working on their house even at unsociable hours), moves on to the next project and takes her yappy dogs, annoying kid and boring husband with her.

Ahhh… I needed that rant…. !!

Exactly this! My sympathies to you too.

To be fair we’re probably really annoying and I don’t want to rake it up for fear of what they may say in return 😁

I don't think they are meant to film anything other than the approach to their home.

tanstaafl · 14/01/2023 07:57

What are these rules you checked?

newbeggins · 14/01/2023 08:03

I would do exactly the same so she too experiences what you do

www.gov.uk/government/publications/update-to-surveillance-camera-code/amended-surveillance-camera-code-of-practice-accessible-version

I'm not sure if this is public camera use eg by councils or by private individuals but there is the clause below which might be relevant -

2.3 Any proposed deployment that also includes audio recording in a public place is likely to require a strong justification of necessity to establish its proportionality. There is a strong presumption that a surveillance camera system must not be used to record conversations as this is highly intrusive and unlikely to be justified.

Could you have wind chimes so that it records constantly......

They’re triggered by movement not sound.

Ohdearnotagain76 · 14/01/2023 08:12

I'd be extra nice and say thanks so much for installing extra security, I was thinking about it but now you have it i don't need to.

Wind chimes move and that’s what creates the sound.

We have an awful neighbour. Been here almost 6 years and right from the off it's been tough.
Couple of times the HA we rent from have tried to help, but in the end she was told 'we obv live very differently to each other so stop complaining'
