We’ve recently done the natural history museum and we aren’t really interested in art.

Can anyone recommend a nice museum to wander around for a few hours please?

What is in the British Museum?

Science museum may be an option, I’ve also seen the Museum of the home advertised.

any other ideas please?

Enjoy whatever you do. I looove a London trip.
Leather lane near Hatton Garden does amazing street food.
Went to V&A when I was there. Loved the jewellery and the Japanese sections.

We've enjoyed the London Transport Museum, Postal Museum, Museum of London Docklands, Imperial War Museum, V&A Museum of Childhood and Museum of Brands (for me, kids would be too young to appreciate the nostalgia so I went alone).

VerbenaGirl · 13/01/2023 22:07

We really enjoyed the Design Museum and a wander through Holland Park nearby.

Oh yes, also loved the Postal Museum, surprisingly interesting. And the British Museum of course, especially for the mummified cats, Tower of London is great and the National Portrait Gallery

Warmdrop · 14/01/2023 07:52

Thanks all, we’re going to book an extra day and do both the science museum and the V&A.

I’ll also take the note about street food at leather lane. Thanks!

Great idea.

It might be worth having a look at the V&A website & deciding which sections you especially want to see.

Few years too late for this one. Pretty sure it closed.

Oh no. Always wanted to go and never got round to it.

WinterFoxes · 14/01/2023 10:59

The Museum of London will reopen in a few years' time. They are building a massive new home for it. It's just closed while they do as that site is being redeveloped. I loved how random it was in there - a golden carriage, a portrait painted by a Kray twin and a leather fireman's bucket from a few centuries ago all bunged together.

Another vote for the V&A!

Make sure you also pass by the Albert Memorial - up the road from the Science museum, opposite the Albert Hall, in Hyde Park. Has to be seen to be believed, and full of interesting detail.

From there you can catch a #9 to Piccadilly or further on to the Strand. Walk across the footbridge from Embankment to the South Bank. Lots of restaurants there, and then a nice walk down to Tate Modern. Across the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's. #11 bus down Fleet Street, past Trafalgar Square to Westminster Abbey/Big Ben.

That'll be enough for one day... LOL.

The Wellcome Collection, focused on medicine/health, is v cool. Is near to Euston, so a nice, v short walk from there to British Museum if you fancy doing both https://wellcomecollection.org

+1 London Transport Museum - https://tiqets.tp.st/tIm6b7ce A lovely museum that tells some of London's history through transport. I was part of a group visiting from London Canal Museum and we all really enjoyed it. It's a museum that appeals to many different types of visitors. There were lots of children clearly having a great time but equally visitors who were transport enthusiasts. There's plenty that's interactive plus the chance to board some of the heritage vehicles. The poster exhibition is a delight. The chance to see original artwork from iconic posters and learn about the artists is fascinating. We were lucky enough to have an excellent guided tour from David and Suneel which oriented us - every member of staff was enthusiastic and very helpful. The shop is full of nice things.

Maritime museum in Greenwich has a planetarium and is in a beautiful park. You can hop on the boat from london bridge to get there OP

The Science Museum is part of/attached to the NHM and the V&A is right next door!? (excellent food/cafe btw) how would you not see this? if you have already ‘done’ the NHM?

If your daughter is 19, perhaps you should ask her what she would like to see/experience? or you know, type in “Nice Museums of London” and select.

Or even,

The Horniman museum in Greenwich is interesting

Also, The National Maritime Museum, it has a planetarium. You can get there on a clipper boat from London Bridge using your oyster card. Beautiful park too.

Horniman is Forest Hill !

Phoebefail · 16/04/2024 09:32

Sloan, Wallace Collection, Nat Portrait Museum which has had a makeover and has been rehung with some themes. I makes more sense not just a way of covering the walls.
Tate Britain. Tate Modern, RAF museum has a lot about the engineering of aircraft.

Churchview · 16/04/2024 10:54

I can't recommend Denis Sever's House highly enough. You're transported out of the city of today into the shadowy, candlelit, coal-fired past. It's slap bang next to Spitalfields Market which is full of food and fun.

Also recommend Southwark Cathedral. A slice through history, a look into the world of the mudlarkers, amazing views of the city from the nearby bridge all within a stone's throw of the glorious Borough Market.
