We had to call an ambulance today for our 18mo who was struggling to breath due to a virus and had a very high temperature. Got taken into hospital, put on nebulisers and steroids and we've not long been back. They said it was stridor breathing caused by croup. Dd is finally asleep and breathing with more ease although still loud. But she's stabilised. I'm so scared to go to sleep though. I just feel like I need to monitor her.

Watching your child struggle to breath is so frightening and I feel like I went into shock ealier. I was trying to hold it together but shaking too.

I guess I just need a hand hold.

Croup does sound terrifying, especially the first time you experience it. Your daughter is in good hands and safe now OP. You took good care of her.

My DC under 1 had croup last month. We ended up in A&E too with the same treatment.
It is scary, but the laboured breathing should improve quickly after the steroids.

The cough can stick around for up to 2 week after though.

When my daughter was a baby we had a coal tar humidifier that helped. They have evolved now and are electric. I bought one for my grandson from Boots, I think. Another thing to do is fill the bath and hold the baby in the steamy room. Writing that, it sounds dangerous, so obviously be careful.
