Hi all,

I have had a cold and been testing for covid and all clear until tonight. Son come in and tested him and all ok but he said his throat feels funny and voice off. He use to get croup when smaller but although can sometimes hear the cough, seems ok lately...

Comes in at 11pm saying he cannot breathe probably so I sent him and my DH straight to A&E. Meanwhile I couldn't go as for my toddler asleep and have covid, so sat here worried...

Anyone else has a child with croup in an older age??

How old is he?

Soontobe60 · 12/01/2023 23:42

Don’t worry - I’m sure he’ll be fine x

Seen a fair bit of croup caused by covid. At his age it should hopefully be milder than when he was younger as the airway is bigger.

My son developed croup at 12. It went on for a few years before it went away. He wasn't breathless but the cough was awful and at one point I ended up taking him to A&E because he was so weak from hours of non stop coughing. He was given steroids but they don't really help. You just have to wait for it to clear up on its own. The doctors always said it sounds worse than it really is. It can be dangerous in young children but isn't in older ones. Apparently even adults can get croup which I was unaware of.

Thanks all :) I had croup growing up so know how he feels but I never ended up at A&E, which he has a few times. In fact they always told me to just take him when he has it if he has issues breathing.

@Zerrin13 Thanks, that has made me feel better to know it can carry on longer than they usually say

I would err towards pneumonia than croup- still awful though, hopefully they’ll be able to get some antibiotics or steroids into him depending on the diagnosis!

Other half messaged to say they said croup and he is on a nebulizer and then they going to give adrenaline (via a mask)... Feel better now I know he is there and being seen too.

They did a chest X-ray on him and they doing covid tests as I told other half to tell them I had it.

They said like you said, and had people with similar symptoms with covid...

The only 'good' thing about croup is the steroids do tend to work pretty fast
