Ashamed to say im a 'add a jar person' for quickness.
However I've been starting to cook from scratch to save ££ but its only cheaper if have lots of the spices etc.
Ive sorted some recipes to try this month and i need about 12 different herbs and spices.
Where's cheapest?

Grapetree often have 3 for 2 on herbs and spices, but their packs are quite big. Someimes the ethnic aisles in supermarkets have cheaper spices than the herb and spice shelves Wholefood shops are quite a good source as well.

saraclara · 12/01/2023 22:24

The ethnic aisles are much better value, but larger packs.
If you want small accounts, Aldi.

saraclara · 12/01/2023 22:24

Amounts, not accounts!

Local health food shop or zero waste shop, ours is 15p for 10g of most herbs/spices.

Slimjimtobe · 12/01/2023 22:31

Aldi is good (some only pence)

ThatsRoughBuddy · 12/01/2023 22:34

Are you anywhere near an Indian supermarket? That’s where I get most of mine.

DuchessofSandwich · 12/01/2023 22:34

I bought a rosemary plant and several chives, mint, oregano, thyme and sage plants 4 years ago and put them in the garden (except the mint, that's in a pot against spreading) and I keep cutting the tops of for use. I'm really getting my moneys worth (and my rosemary is at least two feet high now). So if these are herbs you use, plant them outside and in the case of pots: replant them every spring. Keep the bottom few leaves of each stalk so it keeps growing. Cut back mint totally after flowering.

Indian shop. Don't need to buy big bags, if it's too much, split with a friend . Store in an airtight jar ( jam jar is fine) in a cupboard or drawer, not on display.

tulips27 · 12/01/2023 22:51

Another vote for Indian shop.

Frumpymumma · 12/01/2023 22:52

Our local health food shop closed down lack of custom.
But will see of there's a local ethnic shop. Im sure there's a world food type shop semi local.
And aldi is a good shout. I need a trip there for some bits anyway so i shall look.
Thank you

Asda and Morrisons are often really good for the world food aisles, cans of pulses etc tend to be better value there too.

DeathMetalMum · 12/01/2023 22:59

Aldi. For larger quantities the range has a reasonable stock but I'd wait and see which ones you actually use regularly. We have about six that are used very regularly, and cross over into a fair amount of dishes. Then the rest of a cupboard for ones less used.

tulips27 · 12/01/2023 23:10

Aldi is fine but they only have a limited range. They wouldn't have everything for cooking a curry from scratch, for example.

Frumpymumma · 12/01/2023 23:15

Thanks again.
Im definitely thinking get the smaller ones first so i see whats used.

Pakistani shops

TheClitterati · 12/01/2023 23:23

Go to your Asia food shop.

Our big Sainsbury's and tesco also has a good selection in the world food aisles.

I keep small jars from pesto etc to keep my spices in.

ehb102 · 12/01/2023 23:23

Look for the East End brand. 100g of turmeric for example is cheaper than a Schwarz jar that is a third of the size.

Cumin, coriander, garlic powder, turmeric,.mild curry powder - I get all these from East End.
