Over 50s to be made exempt from income tax

SerendipityJane · 12/01/2023 16:01

for a year.

Admittedly, the Express, so no basis in reality, but an interesting "idea" to tempt older people back to work.

Given that these people didn't give up work because they are loaded, not sure how many would take up such a generous offer.

Also not sure how 16-49 year olds would feel about subbing up this generation.

For me, the real news here is the complete lack of connection between government and the governed. Never ends well, even if you do eat cake.

Not for Tories - it’s just an extension of their policies pandering to reactionary old pensioners.

(Clearly not ALL pensioners, and not even all Tory-voting ones - the reactionary subset of Tory-voting ones. The ones for whom “make shops go back to lbs and ounces not these newfangled “kilo” things” was a vote winner).

It would seriously piss off working people who do not qualify plus older pensioners, IMO. When a policy is fundamentally unfair, it irritates people.

Stopthatknocking · 12/01/2023 18:35

There are very many over 50s on minimum wage.

This is just another tory scheme to give tax breaks to the rich.

Anyone well off enough have retired early can come back to the workforce with no tax to pay, others of the same age who can't afford to stop working can carry on paying tax on thier minimum wage.

Sounds so unfair

Oakbeam · 12/01/2023 18:35

They won’t be subbing them. They will pay the same amount of tax regardless of how many people go back to work, or none.

Prettypaisleyslippers · 12/01/2023 18:37

Bring it on, however most people in my team in their 50’s are earning more than they ever have, so a massive windfall.

They will be subject to a tax rise themselves - by virtue of the frozen thresholds - whilst over 50s get a tax break.

It is an unfair policy, if there is spare money (there isn't) for a tax break, it should be shared out fairly.

HaroldsPeen · 12/01/2023 18:43

FFS is this seriously the state that we're at as a country that ideas that would have been shot down at an A levels politics class is being floated to guage public reaction???!!!!

A) Can the Tories (and all parties for that matter) stop floating ideas in the press. They got into the habit of doing this during Covid and it was really destabilising. But ok, it was a weird situation and maybe elicited weird coping responses. But I can't deal with it being an accepted way of running the country. You can't run the country by opinion poll FFS and I never really know where I stand. Is this actual factual news or the government going fishing? Who knows? And it discredits the news platforms as well because I simply don't trust them any more.

B) Are they really going to give such a huge demographic a cash injection while screwing over the young YET AGAIN? And they think this won't lead to even more discontent? Yes I know, the young don't vote. But this will screw over 30-49 year olds who will most certainly vote.

and
C) Fuck off. And when you get there just keep fucking off until I can't see you any more

Oakbeam · 12/01/2023 18:48

So, how is that subbing the the over 50s? Plus, the over 50s returning to work 50s will be paying NI, effectively subbing the ones that don’t.

LlynTegid · 12/01/2023 18:50

This seems like a joke article to see how many would believe it is even being considered.

The best way that the Tories could do to get people to be less likely to retire early would be to resign.

RedRiverShore3 · 12/01/2023 18:50

Maybe it will only be in certain jobs like care

Georgeskitchen · 12/01/2023 18:52

How about getting some of the half a million or so working age people who are unemployed into work.
They don't want to?
Oh well never mind

CaptainCorellisXylophone · 12/01/2023 18:59

It isn't going to happen, so nobody needs to think about it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/01/2023 17:29

I’m one of the over 50’s who retired.

l don’t want tax cuts to tempt me back to work. Give those to people who need them.

The things that would tempt me back to work would be less stress, less ageism, less thinking that 50 year olds have the same enthusiasm and energy as 20
year olds and less stupid targets.

l was watching this on the BBC politics show this morning. One of the people on there said her friend was a psychologist. The friend left because conditions in the NHS were so shit. Exactly the same reason why l left teaching. Conditions are shit.

This is what needs addressing. Not tax cuts.

This, with bells on.

CheesyCrumpet · 12/01/2023 19:09

Bit of a kick in the teeth for those over 50 who are still working through need rather than choice.
Imagine being over 50 and the new employee, also over 50 working the same job, isn't paying tax while you're still being hammered for it.

I suppose 'subbing' is the wrong word - it was not my word - but clearly the policy would be unfair as poorer 49 year olds would pay more tax than wealthier 50 year olds. Batshit and indefensible.

80sMum · 12/01/2023 19:31

It seems like a daft idea to me. It would be far better to abolish National Insurance and raise income tax, so that wealthier pensioners would be paying a bit more. I don't think it's right that they don't pay any NI at all even if they have a good income. It would seem fairer if everyone paid the same.

reesewithoutaspoon · 12/01/2023 19:32

Nope. Left at 55. Offered to come back 1 shift a week NHS. They said only if I take lower grade at £5 an hour less. I walked. They need to work on retaining the staff they have. I am one of hundreds who have done the same

WoofWoofWoofMudToys · 13/01/2023 00:52

EmmaEmerald · 12/01/2023 18:17

I have a feeling the Govt have a totally mad definition of workers we "need".

@EmmaEmerald

well, yeah, there's that as well 🙇🏻‍♀️

I was thinking (inside the box) teachers (lecturers etc), nurses, doctors, any health care worker. Childcare. retail, hospitality, obviously MN Professionals care workers police fire & other competent adult...

I think it comes down to needing pretty much anyone who can, to work.

Yeah & how would you feel working hard, paying your contribution, planning your future, for the Govt to change its mind when you get to retirement age?

Well they could always raise the pension age. Or just get rid of pensions altogether.

Then we’d be the only country in the developed world without a state pension🙄

A country is judged by how it treats its old and it’s young. I’ve spent 40 years paying NI. I’d go insane if they tried to take it away after I’ve done my bit.

@SerendipityJane

oh do be serious. Our Govt are a shit show, but you're simply proving how much worse it could be.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 13/01/2023 09:49

I’ve just turned 50 & that idea is utterly batshit.

EmmaEmerald · 13/01/2023 10:48

OP I think the state pension will be gone by the time I get to that age.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2023 12:21

What’s the point in paying Ni then?

They can’t just take it away if you’re paying for it.

Oakbeam · 13/01/2023 18:08

They can’t just take it away if you’re paying for it.

No but they can, and have, move the goalposts further and further away.
