Do we really need them?

No!
i commented this recently. I like cooking smells or open a window if you don’t.

dementedpixie · 12/01/2023 12:04

I'd say yes especially if you cook a lot and create a lot of steam.

purpleme12 · 12/01/2023 12:05

This house didn't come with a cooker hood .
I've really noticed how steamy and wet it gets!
I can't believe it! I swear it didn't happen in the old house. The old house did have a cooker hood.
I don't even cook loads

WeAllHaveWings · 12/01/2023 12:07

We like ours as we have a small kitchen and steam builds up very quickly.

dementedpixie · 12/01/2023 12:08

I assume you mean extractor fan. We have one that extracts outdoors. I dont think the recirculation ones are supposed to be very effective.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 12/01/2023 12:08

The fan has gone on mine and now the windows all steam up when I am cooking so the answer to your question is - yes

BarrelOfOtters · 12/01/2023 12:08

Our kitchen fitter said no, just open a window. We did end up getting a complicated venting hob which vents through a duct in the floor to outside.

We use it because it's there. the only time it hasn't coped was Christmas - and we cook a lot - when we opened the windows.

Basically no I don't think you need one as long as you put lids on pots, open a window and don't mind the odd bit of lingering cooking smell.

MyGrandmaLizzie · 12/01/2023 12:12

Yes but you need one that extracts to outside otherwise they aren't very good and your kitchen will get very steamy and damp

MadamBuxton · 12/01/2023 12:13

You can have an extractor fan without it being a hood if you don't like the look of them. We have one in the ceiling near to our hob which is fairly flush and just operates with a switch on the wall. I'm sure it isn't as effective as a hood directly over the hob but I don't have any issues.

HaroldInTheDogBowl · 12/01/2023 12:15

No.

seperatedmum · 12/01/2023 12:17

very much so. I don't have one coz the idiot former owner made it impossible with the kitchen layout the neighbours have them and no I haven't had the money to redo the kitchen 😕 the whole house gets steamy and smells of food which is especially horrible in the summer. opening the door is limited help

Don't think much of your kitchen fitter. Your comment made me think he is a lazy bxxxxxx

BarrelOfOtters · 14/01/2023 10:27

Nope he’s a really nice guy, not a lazy bastard at all, and happily fitted our quite complex ducting including drawings so we could get someone to manufacture a duct for us to minimise corners due to layout and ringing the manufacturer for us.

he’s fitted lots of kitchens, his parents don’t have a fan I. Their kitchen they just open the windows, likewise for him. They all do lots of cooking, we know them….

he’s just seen a lot of people sold very expensive cooker hoods and ventilation systems that he’s not entirely sure they’ve all needed.

canina · 14/01/2023 18:54

I really hate the look and the noise so I've taken to opening the window.
Just made marmalade with the window open and it was okay.
