Should I hand my notice in without offer letter?

So was verbally offered a job last Friday, need to have health check, dbs as well.
The hiring manager (it's a school) said in her email to me at start of the week, to accept the offer on the online portal, I haven't received this, which I have emailed back to say, I haven't heard anything yet. They have a provisional start date of the week beginning 6th February, for me to achieve this I need to hand my notice in now, but am worried about doing it without the offer letter. Should I?

No. Always wait until you have written confirmation.

Catdogfrog · 11/01/2023 14:20

No. Dont hand in your notice until you have a formal written job offer.

DoThePropeller · 11/01/2023 14:20

I would wait until you’ve received formal offer/signed a contract to hand in your notice. It’s unusual but things do get pulled.

Sammysquiz · 11/01/2023 14:21

Absolutely not!

SalviaOfficinalis · 11/01/2023 14:21

No, absolutely not.
If you can’t start at the target date, they’ll have to accept that if it’s been caused by delays on their side.

Viviennemary · 11/01/2023 14:22

I don't think I would ha3md in my notice without a formal offer. Just e-mail them to say you will be available to start one month after the job offer is confirmed. Or whatever your current notice notice period is. Or accept the offer but dont confirm the start date.

Bard6817 · 11/01/2023 14:24

No never.

Drop them an email to let them know that you have a notice period, and that you will hand in your notice when you have a written offer.

This is basic stuff though - so they are being idiots!! Not a great sign.

BamBamBilla · 11/01/2023 14:25

No. Chase up with the school that you haven't had a link to accept via the portal and if they delay further you'll have to push back the start date due to notice periods.

Thanks everyone,

I think the issue is it's run by a partnership who runs a few school, so has to be sorted by them. I emailed yesterday with no response, debating giving the school a call to see what's happening.

Just call them

Pompatrol · 11/01/2023 14:31

Never until the offer is in writing!

Tickledtrout · 11/01/2023 15:22

Call them by all means but do not resign until you have the firm offer. Which will come after checks

GiltEdges · 11/01/2023 15:24

No. Go back to the person you’re dealing with and explain you’ll be waiting for the written off r before handing in your notice and make them aware that this is likely to have an impact on your start date with them. Start dates are easily amended.

ghtt · 11/01/2023 15:27

I have rang, person wasn't available so they have said taken a message.

I would strongly advise you wait. I work in recruitment in a Trust and please be aware that DBS's are taking a lot longer than 4 weeks at the moment. Don't rush into handing your notice until you get the offer letter, and they have submitted your DBS. I would clarify with them about what will happen if the DBS doesn't come through in time. They may do a risk assessment to allow you to start without one, but they may actually not let you start until it has been cleared. Just worth asking as it has been particularly bad recently.
