Ibuprofen gel and stomach ulcers

I have a history of stomach ulcers and, as such, can’t take ibuprofen/ Nurofen. Over the last few months I’ve very quickly developed symptoms of arthritis in my hands. I saw the doctor just before Christmas and he referred me to a specialist but it’s over a year wait. Since then my hands have got much worse - I struggle to hold the steering wheel of my car, can’t make a fist at all, can’t open bottles and struggle with door handles. The middle joint on my index and pointer finger are so swollen that none of my rings fit and my thumbs are swollen and red/ purple most of the time.

I spoke to my GP again yesterday and he said since he’s referred me there’s little else he could do but recommended ibuprofen gel and some hand exercises. I’ve been costing my hands and fingers in the gel but then read the leaflet and it says it can cause stomach ulcers (doesn’t say not to use if you’ve had stomach ulcers like the tablets do though). Does anyone know if I’m ok to carry on using it? I’ll call my GP again, obviously but it’s unlikely I’ll get a response from him this week. Any other tips on how to stop my hands getting worse would be gratefully received too.

I'm not sure if the gel will cause stomach issues, but I would recommend trying Pernaton Green Lipped Mussel Gel rather than ibuprofen. I have arthritis in my fingers, and wrist and find even the 10% ibuprofen gel does nothing other than leave a weird coating on my skin.

Give the above a try, its about £12 from Amazon, and gives me instant relief.

Thanks @Itsvalentino ive never heard of that stuff. I’ll order some now.

I was told by both a doctor and a pharmacist that the gel would not impact stomach issues - I can't take ibuprofen orally. I use the gel a lot and find it very useful. I'd recommend the 10% type. Prices vary hugely - be wary!

You could try DMSO.

Pharmacist can advise on this sort of question.

I feel nauseous if I take ibuprofen tablets, but have never had any issue with using gel, so imagine it doesn’t have quite the same side effects as ingesting the ingredients.

Yes, most people can safely use the gel on skin whilst not being able to take the oral tablets. The gel will not enter your stomach and therefore not cause harm there.

Compression gloves help my arthritic hands. I know that NICE found no evidence they are beneficial but still for a less than a tenner, worth a punt.

I have these .

I was told not to use it for similar reasons it does reach the blood stream albeit slower and at a lower level than orally
