Propranolol for migraine

I've recently had the worst migraine I've ever had and the doctors have prescribed propanolol. Having had a quick google I've seen that it can lead to low blood pressure/low heart rate and dizziness. My blood pressure is already on the low side and my usual resting heart rate is low 50's (sometimes even high 40's)

Does anyone have any experience of taking propranolol especially for migraines?

I take it I'm 42, yes my heart rate quite often dips below 40bpm if I'm sitting still according to my watch, Bp on lower side, GP isn't concerned, I do get dizzy if I stand up suddenly as usual for me, propanol has helped me not develop so many so serious migraines but not stopped them completely I get cold white hands anyway so it's not much worse

I have low BP and have taken it for panic attacks. It's been great for me with no side effects.

Fizzadora · 11/01/2023 07:58

I have taken it for migraines for years. I had low bp previously. No side effects apart from weight gain but when I did try to wean myself off it to help lose some weight bp went up so GP told me to go back on.

however I get what I think are panic attacks when it runs out have massive problems with the pharmacy

My husband takes it for migraines. Works extremely well for migraines. His normal resting HR is around 58 and it's now slightly lower, drops below 50 fairly regularly. I think it took a little getting used to but he's absolutely fine now and the benefits far outweigh the couple of weeks adjusting for him. But he had retailer migraines; like once a week or more and their are migraines with aura so he was blind and unable to do much.

It helped with my migraines but I didn't get on with it at all. Constantly felt dizzy and light headed. Some people love it though. I have high blood pressure and heart rate tends to the high side too, not sure if that's relevant.

Meant to say I now use Amitriptyline as a preventative instead which is much better for me.

I've been taking it for 5 years with no issues, occasional dizzy spells but they disappear fairly quickly. I was prescribed 80mg per day but I've reduced it to every 2 days which is still doing the trick

My heart rate is usually low and I was prescribed this for migraines. Going from 2 per week to one every 6 weeks it's helped a lot. My heart rate now has only dropped from 55 to late 40s when resting.

My heat rate also never races even when walking up hill.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 11/01/2023 09:05

I take it for GAD and panic disorder but it did absolutely nothing for my migraines. I already had low blood pressure/heart rate and it hasn’t affected that at all.

I now take topomax for migraine prevention. It’s been a literal life changer.

MaverickSnoopy · 11/01/2023 09:17

I was on this for a while and was told it was standard to have your heart rate checked before being prescribed. I wasn't allowed it until it had been checked.

lobsterkiller · 11/01/2023 09:19

I took it in the past, when I used to get migraines. For some reason, that I'm not questioning they stopped in my early thirties.

I have normal BP, for me I found it a great drug for preventing migraine. It did leave me a bit spaced out but not enough to stop me going about my business, however at the time I didn't own a car so I can't tell you about driving/operating machinery etc.

TheFutureIs · 11/01/2023 13:04

Not feeling quite so apprehensive about it now. Hoping I don't suffer from weight gain on it as I've just lost over a stone and hoping to lose at least 1 more. Will just have to up the exercise if I do start to gain

My son in law takes it for his migraines, alongside another prescription thing he takes when he feels one coming on (unsure what they are).
His migraines have increased recently and the GP has found his blood pressure is quite high so now waiting to see if there might be a connection between the two. He's still on the Propranolol though.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/01/2023 18:49

I took it for migraines... but didn't get on with it. I have low blood pressure and I just felt totally spaced out and dizzy. It got rid of my insomnia though! I think I just passed out every night Blush

I went onto HRT instead - it had become apparent that the migraines were fuelled by hormones.

TourmalineGiraffe · 11/01/2023 18:54

I tried it for migraine prevention didn't work for me.
Now take 40mg of amitriptyline which makes a huge difference.
Same as PP I also found hrt has helped with migraine too.
