What to wear in Spain in February

We're going to Valencia in February. I can only take a very small suitcase so need to make sure I am taking the right clothes.

What should I wear in February? It looks to be around 20 degrees but do people wear spring summer clothes like summer dresses and tops? Or should I just be wearing lighter autumn clothes?

Please help, I'm hopeless at this...

Locals won't be wearing spring or summer clothes.
I'm in Italy and we have days now with those temperatures, the odd ones, but it's still very much winter and people wear puffer jackets, coats, boots etc. I remember being in Spain once at Easter and it snowed.
I'd go for the light autumn wardrobe

Went last February and took jeans, fleeces, coats - bloody stupid. It was roasting 😂 Lived in the same stuff all week, too warm for most of what we took.

Locals were dressed in layers but we live in a cold part of the country and were boiling.

This is what I'm scared of doing? What were other people wearing?

It will be chilly at night so have a jacket. I wear clothes I can layer as during the afternoons in the sun it is really warm.

mauvish · 10/01/2023 18:58

The local grannies won't be removing their coats (and dare I say, their vests too) until May at the earliest!

Flittyflower · 10/01/2023 18:59

Thanks everyone. So it's warm but I shouldn't take summer type clothes? I should take jeans and some light tops with a jacket?

Should I take shorts for the DC or DH? Or is that too summery also?

Gah...I'm hopeless at this!

I've been to Valencia at a similar time of year and recommend layers too. Tops, a few sweatshirts and a jacket that goes with all your outfits. It will be warm in the sun during the day but chilly morning/evening.

Locals will be wearing jeans, leggings and puffa jackets. That’s what absolutely everyone wore in Granada in November.

GirlInTheDryShirt · 10/01/2023 19:01

I live in Valencia so hopefully can help! It’s not sundress weather at all in February, we’d wear leggings, a top and a jacket with a scarf in the day, and at night it’s chilly so big coat and boots. Basically what a British person would call light autumn wear as a PP said. It’s very humid here so even at 15°C we’re in autumn wear because it feels colder. Having said that we’re all acclimatised to our own weather and you do see tourists here in shorts and on the beach in February but they stick out quite a bit!

We always go in February half term. No crowds and the locals, as they’re just opening up for the season, aren’t jaded and fed up with tourists! My teens wear shorts and T-shirts and carry hoodies in back packs in case it gets chilly later in the day. I wear cotton joggers from Gap, see photo, with various T-shirts or short sleeved shirts and also carry a hoodie. Usually warm enough to go in the sea but not always. We always come back with a nice tan though.

They dress for the season not the temperature. It’s still late winter/ early spring so they’ll be bundled up. It’s also a city so the look is urban. Lots of casual stuff.

I only take hand luggage. I usually take some shiny trousers ( easier to wipe stuff off,) vests to wear under slouchy long sleeve tops and a longer smart jacket/ blazer. I bring a blanket type scarf which is good for cooler days and cold planes and removed for hot sun and when they turn the air con off. And sunglasses because it’s holiday.
A pair of jeans and a nice longer dress in whatever style is current. Also swimwear for hotel pool ( I don’t mind the cold).

Think of what you would wear on a nice late Spring day at home. It would not be sundress/shorts/bikini, but possibly short sleeved T shirt, light full length trousers, and a rain jacket/fleece in your little day pack correct? That is the minimum for Spain outside of the melting season! Similar for the H, and leggings/trainers + above for kids.

I was in San Pedro near Marbella until 25th November. Weather was amazing compared to home, but definitely not shorts and sleeveless weather. I used the above combo with trainers in the day, and a nice pair of black trousers with mix and match long sleeve tops at night with flats/loafers. Light waist length puffer jacket that folds up to nothing on standby as nights get surprisingly cold.

Hope you have a great time.

BTW I was travelling alone, and everything fitted into a "baby changing style" backpack that I could put under the seat, it holds LOADS but is very compact. It is amazing how little you actually need. Learned over the years what works for what time of year. Less is more!

Flittyflower · 10/01/2023 19:23

Thank you, everyone! I now feel confident in what I need to take. Thank you all for being so helpful!
