Do you think you could get any job you applied for?

Not for example if you were a trained solicitor and went for a job as a neurosurgeon.

But in your field of work, if you saw another job you wanted would be extremely confident you’d get it?

Nope, never been able to even get a permanent job, never mind a dream job.

Lots of qualifications, even experience but my face doesn't fit my "profession". Apparently, too female & too old when first looking for an initial training contract.

Why are you asking?

7Worfs · 10/01/2023 10:38

No. I often make it to the final round though. Some reasons I don’t get the offer have been:

  • not enough experience at that level of seniority
  • not enough subject matter expertise
  • I’m not as confident communicator as a native English speaker
  • I asked for too much money
  • I don’t behave as though I really want the job/revere the company

It’s all good learning experience though. I keep applying for jobs that would move me up the ladder and I don’t waiver on salary expectations.

Worldgonecrazy · 10/01/2023 10:45

Yes. Last time I was job hunting I got interviews for all jobs I applied for. The only one I wasn’t offered formally was due to having a holiday booked and they needed someone for a particular start date to enable handover. I was offered all the other jobs I applied for.

My interview tips are to prepare well, anticipate questions, don’t be afraid to take in your notes, including a copy of the job description with examples and demonstrations of where you have demonstrated key qualities and requirements, don’t be generic in responses, talk about something that will make you memorable, be polite and remember the name of the receptionist/whoever offers you a drink and welcomes you, and always send a thank you.

Boooooot · 10/01/2023 10:47

I’ve always been very fortunate that I’ve never been turned down for a job that I’ve applied for. Pure luck though I think.

Namechanger355 · 10/01/2023 10:49

No

have lots of qualifications (solicitor, masters) and Am at top of/lead my team in what I do but still wouldn’t expect to walk into it any equivalent job in other organisations as too competitive

Oncemoreforluck · 10/01/2023 10:52

No, I don’t think so.
So far though, I have been offered every job I have interviewed for and ACTUALLY WANTED.
So, I am probably not doing my best at interviews where I’ve got a feeling that it’s not the right job for me.

eurochick · 10/01/2023 10:53

No. I've been very successful in my career and in my last role was the most senior woman in my team. I still didn't expect to (and indeed did not) walk into anything I applied for when I left.

BoringLittleMe · 10/01/2023 10:53

Yes, in my field. I'm good at tailoring my application/CV and I'm very good at being interviewed.

I've just started looking for jobs outside my field and I'm still working out how to get my application just right so I get some interviews.

fatherfintanstack · 10/01/2023 10:59

Well, I'm retraining so not sure what my new profession will be like. Regarding my old one and interim part time work, I don't think I could get every and any job but I am confident in my application and interview technique, plus selling my experience and transferable skills, so am happy to push my luck and it paid off somewhat (neither a big money sector but interesting work). So much depends on the competition, though, that a big element is luck.

Desmondo2021 · 10/01/2023 11:01

Yes, in my field and assuming there were no specific skills required that I don't have.

Aposterhasnoname · 10/01/2023 11:06

Yes, last time it took exactly ten days from deciding I wanted out of the old place to being offered a new job.

MincePiesAreMyJam · 10/01/2023 11:10

Mine have been totally random. One I thought I matched perfectly for I didn't even get an interview, and my current job I applied for on a whim 12 hours before the deadline, only meeting about half the criteria and I was offered it within 24 hours of the interview.

So I wouldn't be confident no, although I suspect my chances are now better because I'm back to full time hours after15 years of reduced hours due to childcare.

JudgeyMcJudgeyPants · 10/01/2023 11:12

No, most of the time my CV is weeded out in the first stage. The few times that I've actually been called for an interview I've almost always been offered the job.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 10/01/2023 11:16

No. I interview badly as I have no confidence. I umm and ahhh a lot and I always look flustered. Interestingly this didn't seem to matter to interviewers when I was young and very attractive.

My DP is great at interviews and generally gets every job he's interviewed for. He sounds very eloquent and knowledgeable about anything he speaks about.

Hoppinggreen · 10/01/2023 11:17

Yes, I generally do.
I am very very good at interviews - much better than I am at any actual job!

FuckabethFuckor · 10/01/2023 11:18

No. Too many factors outside my control in most hiring processes. I have 20 years of empirical evidence showing that this is the case!

I’m good at what I do and I know my worth. But that’s not the same as thinking I could get any job I applied for.

AWaferThinMint · 10/01/2023 11:20

Historically yes. I can only think of one job interview I've attended where I didn't get an offer. Instead o got a call saying that they liked me but thought I'd be bored and leave and they needed someone who they felt would stay longer. They were probably right.

I'm good in interview situations though. I'm comfortable, don't panic, happy to say when I don't know something, can ask responsive questions.

Parisj · 10/01/2023 11:20

Yes, I failed an interview at 15 and after that I got my shit together and I have been successful for all jobs I have wanted. I prepare extremely thoroughly and make sure that I am fluent in my answers.

Lcb123 · 10/01/2023 11:21

No because that’s a stupid mindset and you will be disappointed and not prepare well. But at the moment it’s a job seekers market.

Claretmum · 10/01/2023 11:23

Yes - I've been fortunate to have never had an unsuccessful interview. I was offered a new role yesterday and actually thought I had made a right old mess of the interview! 😂

Timspam · 10/01/2023 11:24

Not a chance, just turned 50, educated to A Level, 30 years of various management jobs, now I am basically invisible, don't even get a reply. Had my hours cut at work and got an interview at a dog food factory the one on TV thingy box, didn't even get that. Depressing stuff lol

Scooopsahoy · 10/01/2023 11:24

No. You only have control over yourself and your application and interview.

You have no control over who else applies for the job - you might be amazing, but someone else might be even better and/or more suited to that particular job.

Linked to this, I never take not getting a job offer personally, it just means there was someone better than me who applied.

CrimsonAlligator · 10/01/2023 11:26

No, not at all.

Having said that, I did recently apply for a job that I know absolutely nothing about and now have an interview lined up. I talked to the manager beforehand who told me that as far as they are concerned, it’s all about transferable skills, which is why I decided to apply. In my experience, while managers may say that, they still prefer applications from people who are already experts in the area, so I’ll just have to wait and see how this interview goes and whether this particular manager actually meant what they said!

Theraffarian · 10/01/2023 11:28

I have always in the past ( although I’m pretty loyal to my company so will include changes there as well as external interviews ) , so I’d say yes probably ! However that does make me sound cocky which I’m not , I’m just fortunate in that I have a fairly good CV and interview particularly well . It doesn’t stop the pre interview nerves mind ! The only time in 35plus years of not getting the job I interviewed for, they offered me another one , and twice I’ve turned down jobs at interview because I’ve realised once there they weren’t going to be the fit I had hoped.

My husband is supremely more qualified in his role , however would freely acknowledge he interviews quite badly as as such has had a fair share of rejections.

Gufo · 10/01/2023 11:39

I wanted to know this so tracked my last job hunt. I applied for 10 jobs in the last 6 months. All my sector and either side steps or next level.

1 ghosting.
1 rejection pre-interview.
8 interviews - 4 of which I withdrew from beforehand as the roles/salary weren't right on reflection - these were the side steps.

Of the remaining 4 (next level up roles), 2 rejected me post-interview both claiming I was second choice, 2 offered me a job. I start next week and don't want to do another application for a looooong time!
