Anyone on here with IBD? Have you told work/does it effect your work?

I'm on the waiting list for a colonoscopy with suspected IBD. I've had to take a few days off due to symptoms, and I think I need to tell my manager although I don't have a diagnosis yet...

If you have IBD, has it effected you at work/have you had any reasonable adjustments made? If you did tell work, how was their response?

Thank you

I was 16 when I was diagnosed so I've never known a working life without it. At first I didn't have the confidence to advocate for myself so I struggled (really struggled!) for 2 years after I'd finished my degree working full time. I then requested part time hours and haven't looked back really.

I'm 42 now. I work in the NHS. My manager is amazing. I choose my work pattern to suit my symptoms depending on the kind of week I'm having. I'm allowed to take time off for hospital appointments and medication deliveries (have to be signed for). Unlimited toilet breaks and flexible start time.

I make sure I pull my weight though, I go above and beyond whenever I can, I always volunteer to work Xmas, bank Holidays, weekends etc.

Definitely tell your manager. They must be supportive. Also read up your works disability policies. Best of luck.

I've had ulcerative colitis since 2011, and my current employer (since 2013) has been brilliant.
I have been allowed to work from home if unwell all the way along but now I only work from home and try to go in the office once a week.
I have time off for all my medical appointments and can rest if I need to.
IBD is covered by the equality act as a disability and a good employer should recognise their obligations.
