Anyone else not like going on holiday?

Hi,

Last year we spent ££££ on a holiday in Spain. It was mainly for dd tbh who had been pleading for another 'proper' beach holiday for a couple of years. Don't get me wrong, we enjoy parts of it - the weather, the pool/beach, the views etc, but even though we'd forked out thousands in a 4* hotel, we still had to make do with the sofa bed in the living room, so had zero privacy, very little comfort and so felt like crap for most of the day!

You get home and think, why did I pay to have less comfort than I have at home for free?! A holiday is supposed to be relaxing, but we pretty much always come home absolutely exhausted, sun burnt, slightly larger and so relieved to be back in our own bed!

This year we've decided we can't afford it and are instead having a few mini breaks or just taking time off and staying at home, having days out, staying with family etc and honestly, I'm so relieved! I've never been so relieved not to be able to afford something! 😂

Who's with me?...

I love going abroad for my holidays, but I've always booked 2-bedroom accommodation. Never spent multiple 1000's either despite being during school holidays.

IamSmarticus · 09/01/2023 13:50

I mean, I love going on holiday but probably wouldn't have enjoyed the one you describe.

If you forked out ££££ to stay in a 4* hotel, then why were you on a sofa bed in the living room?

GoodVibesHere · 09/01/2023 13:51

We always stay in a villa with a bedroom each, just like at home. It doesn't cost more than a hotel.

Krakenes · 09/01/2023 13:52

I love going on holiday. We always book our own place with separate bedrooms for everyone. I do agree, the holiday you’ve described sounds like a nightmare to me!!

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 13:53

Well I enjoy it but sleeping on a sofa bed on your holidays sounds grim to be honest! If you’ve spent ££££ already, why not spend that bit more to make sure you’ve got an actual bedroom and a standard of comfort?

If I could be teleported to my destination I'd love it these days. Hate the hassle of taking the guts of a day to get to anywhere in Europe when you factor in travel to and from airport, parking, checking in, security, queuing at the gate, often delayed, waiting for baggage other end, getting hire car/transfer. Oh to hell with it.

I'm going to go by train this year to S France stopping along the way. Won't take less time, but far less hassle and no baggage restrictions/transfers required.

Anyway I'm not a beach holiday person at all, I would be bored out of my mind. So it's horses for courses.

Floralnomad · 09/01/2023 14:01

We’ve never liked beach type holidays and I never go anywhere for more than 4/5 days . 2 day short breaks on a regular basis is the ideal for me mainly city breaks / theatre breaks / museums etc .

@Flowersinthebasement Yes! I should have added all those reasons too! I also don't like flying, so that's another layer 🙄

I’m not as wild about it as I used to be (probably an age thing) but one thing I absolutely must have nowadays, whether hotel, Airbnb, or someone else’s house, if dh and I will be sharing, is a king size bed. So I’d never book or agree to accomm like you describe, where a sofa bed (often uncomfortable and too small) would be our lot.
Just recently, although offered accomm at a relative’s house, we stayed at a good old Premier Inn, instead - not only a lovely big bed, but an en-suite, too.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 09/01/2023 14:06

I like it when I'm actually ON holiday I just hate the getting there. Airports are the seventh circle of hell.

mycatsanutter · 09/01/2023 14:07

Nope , just got back from a last minute trip to Lanzarote and wish I was still there . No work , no housework , no rain , no cooking I love it !

Bestcatmum · 09/01/2023 14:22

I never go on holiday. I miss my cats, my hobbies, the countryside. I have travelled all over the world and I've lived abroad so not a cave dweller but I've given all that up now and prefer my home. There are numerous beaches half to one hour from where I live for day trips and lots of national parks and lovely places.

SpentDandelion · 09/01/2023 14:45

I had my first holiday abroad in 9 yrs last summer, l forgot how stressful travelling was, and it seemed to take forever. Such a long winded faff at the airport. I enjoyed it once there but not in a rush to repeat. Being hemmed in on a plane for hours, surrounded by passengers continuously coughing is not fun.
I am quite happy at home, pottering and enjoying cats and garden, plus a lot cheaper. I read somewhere about best thing to do was create a way of life you don't feel you need to escape from.

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 14:50

I do agree that the travelling part is a ball ache and I would also quite happily be teleported to my destination of choice! I hate flying too however I do it because I like the sun, new places, different cuisine, experiencing new cultures, all that stuff really.
we aren’t ones for lying by a pool or beach all day but would certainly factor in a bit of time for that too, love a dip in the pool when I’m hot!

MissAmbrosia · 09/01/2023 15:13

I would hate your holiday too. I either drive or take the train if at all possible and rent an apartment. I don't want to go on holiday and have no mod-cons or enough proper beds.

MaverickGooseGoose · 09/01/2023 15:14

I love holidays. We do a mixture of

driving to France, caravan holidays - always book a bigger caravan than needed so have a room for storage.

Hotel holidays whether Cory or beach we get a suite or at least a partitioned room with beds for the kids, not sofa beds which are generally shot and uncomfortable.

Uk premier inn type shirt breaks, can put up with the sofa beds for a couple of nights.

We live an hour from Gatwick and an hour from dover which makes things easier.
