Child's Bank app/card/pocket money tracker

Hello, looking for recommendations on how best to manage my DD12 transition to having a debit card for her pocket money. She is also keen on the idea of getting additional money for chores etc.

I have seen cards and apps which have fees, are these worth it?

and do I need to have an account with the same bank to make it work?

Thank you 😊

Get her a nationwide flex account.

Hyper jar. Completely free and very easy to navigate, my 7yo has his own account and card which I've linked to my standard current account with a Completely unrelated bank.

Second vote for hyper jar. I have a jar for all 3 of my child DCs. It’s been great and no fees

My 2 DC (11&13) both have children's account with HSBC. Free to open and a debit card is provided but won't allow them to go overdrawn. Easy for me to transfer their pocket money plus any extra they earn through chores. DS (13) also has a linked savings account. I can't oversee it, but have no real desire to. They both spend it mainly on sweets, occasional clothes/online gaming and don't have much more than £50-£100 in it at any one time, so I'm not overly concerned if they blow the lot and then then have nothing left for a while.

I looked at them all recently for my 9yo and went with Rooster. It's now owned by NatWest, so if you have a NatWest or RBS account you get a year for free.

I think NatWest do a free teen account for age 11+, so you might not need a pocket money account/app.

Looked at Hyperjar but found it was more restrictive, I can't remember why as this was 6 months ago when I looked.

We use Go Henry for DS. Its £2.49 a month, so a pricier option but you can set tasks for pocket money and tick off those that get done to send pocket money over. The app is simple enough to use and we all really like it and think its worth the charge. Its very likely that we will move to a proper bank one soon, as he is getting too old for Go Henry.

Another vote for Nationwide.

Thanks everyone, currently looking at the GoHenry app.

Once they're 11, it's a complete waste of money to pay for a card. Get them a bank account with a debit card and a chore list.
