Yesterday morning my I felt like I had something in my eye under my eyelid which felt really scratchy and sore. I tried eye drops and washed my eye out as best I could but it didn’t make any difference. I’ve had a good look but I can’t see anything obvious. Today it’s a lot worse, my eye is bloodshot and really sore, it feels like it’s on fire. Every time I blink it feels like something is scratching my eyeball. My vision keeps going blurry and it’s producing a lot of yellow gunk too

I’m not sure if I should be trying my GP or an optician? Or someone else? I really have no idea who to start with

We have an eye hospital with an a and e department. I'd go there

LIZS · 09/01/2023 11:47

Ask pharmacist who they would suggest.

Kathybelle · 09/01/2023 11:58

I would go to the optician, they will be able to have a good look for you

Pharmacy first. I had the same last week which developed into conjunctivitis. Ointment cleared it up pretty quickly.

AuntieDolly · 09/01/2023 12:00

Medicated eye drops from the pharmacist would be my first call

GreenManalishi · 09/01/2023 12:00

Eye hospital if there is one, optician, pharmacist, in that order.

AffIt · 09/01/2023 12:02

If you have an eye hospital nearby, that would be ideal - otherwise, an optician will have the equipment to take a good look at your eye and advise if further treatment is required.

A pharmacist may well be able to make an educated guess, but won't be able to look so closely.

Eye cas. That's what we advise our patients. GPs don't deal with eye injuries.

MrsPuggyWuggy · 09/01/2023 12:09

Thank you everyone. We do have an eye hospital about 30 miles away which just has an a&e but no minor injuries section so I wasn’t sure if I would be wasting their time turning up there

LIZS · 09/01/2023 12:12

Unless you have someone to drive you there, 30miles is too far unless referred.

spiderlight · 09/01/2023 12:14

Give the eye hospital a ring - they are the best people to advise you on where to go.

MrsPuggyWuggy · 09/01/2023 19:50

Thanks everyone, I rang the eye hospital, they gave me the number for a local eye treatment service run from the opticians. I’ve got bacterial conjunctivitis. Never had it before, I had no idea how painful it could be!
