Weird chest pains earlier.

Before I start I’m going to call the doctor tomorrow and see if they can fit me in but wanted to ask here if anyone has had similar.

This afternoon i experienced sharp chest pains that felt maybe muscular near the upper left section of my chest. It was sort of like cramping. My breathing wasn’t affected and then I had tingling in my left shoulder. It subsided totally after about an hour, the main pains came when I was exhaling but I wasn’t struggling to get air in and out.

Now, this also happened to me a couple of years ago, dh called an ambulance and it was all incredibly embarrassing as by the time they arrived (in less than 10 minutes but it had been going on for about half an hour by the time we called), it was virtually over. They took me to hospital as a precaution because I had flown the night before and they wanted to rule out a blood clot. Everything was fine and they sent me home.

obviously at the moment I don’t want to be taking the piss out of the nhs - is there anything a gp will be likely to do for me tomorrow given that the pain has gone and it’s not a persistent problem?!

What is your age, general health and other symptoms? Have you been doing any exercise, gardening, cleaning etc.?

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 08:11

I’m 38, general health is fine, live an active lifestyle, gym a couple of times a week and walk a few miles every day.
I hadn’t been doing any exercise yesterday before the pain started.

Indigestion?

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 11:52

I hadn’t eaten anything by that point since the night before.
I went to the appointment, he listened to my heart and chest, sounded fine. Sent me for an ECG and there was a slight anomaly so had to wait 30 minutes and have another. Just waiting for the results now but likely to be another unexplained nothing! I’m so glad I didn’t panic and call an ambulance yesterday, I’m already mortified that I’ve wasted the doctors time!!

It might be a precordial catch pain. I used to get them a lot in my twenties.

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 12:09

Never heard of that before! Still waiting for an update.

I know I’ll get piled on for saying this but given your age and general health, it’s is statistically v unlikely to be a cardio issue and so I’m left wondering why you react this way. Do you have general health anxiety. People get aches and pains.

I get that! Never encountered anyone else who has even heard of it. It's flipping painful and usually totally random, but it goes away if I can steel myself to breathe in deeply enough to make it sort of 'pop'.

Hope your ECG is clear, OP.

My daughter had been having chest pains for a couple of weeks and one evening between Christmas and new year they got a lot worse. She had been Googling and thought it sounded like a cracked rib or collapsed lung, neither of which seemed at all likely!

She called 111 who recommended A&E so I took her in. Hospital took bloods, did an ECG and a chest x-ray all of which came back clear. They diagnosed costochondritis and said it would sort itself out in time but to take ibuprofen for the pain.

Could it be that? www.nhs.uk/conditions/costochondritis/

Crispycremedelight · 09/01/2023 12:34

You totally did the right thing! When I was 37, relatively healthy. I had chest pains - not constant just when I moved, I had partially ruptured my Aorta-I had an aneurysm (I knew this hence going to A&E). A&E totally missed it despite them hearing turbulence when listening to my heart

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 12:41

@PiccalilliPops i don’t think I’m an anxious person in general, it’s the first time I’ve been to the doctors in almost 4 years. I don’t take medication and have no health conditions other than a bad back after 2 slipped discs 5 years ago which is why I keep myself as mobile as possible.
I think most people would be worried and would seek to find out if there was a cause if they had sudden onset chest pains wouldn’t they? Maybe it’s just me 😂
I don’t think I’ve reacted any particular way, just wondered if anyone had ever had a similar thing and a few people have posted with some suggestions, I was curious as to what it could be as I had a feeling it wasn’t anything serious (hence not calling 999) based on the fact that something similar had happened a few years ago.
@Fifthtimelucky hope your daughter recovers quickly 💐

Thanks. The ibuprofen has been helping and she was definitely reassured by the tests ruling out more serious possibilities.

Incidentally, we had been dreading the visit to A&E for obvious reasons but we were in and out in less than five hours.

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2023 13:30

Wow @Crispycremedelight - are you okay now? 😱
that’s good @Fifthtimelucky and the reassurance is helpful too.
I’ve just had the results through and they are showing another anomaly so they’re sending me for some blood tests and then I’ll be going home. Phew!
