What sickness record could stop you from getting a job

Planning to leave my job in the next 6 months ish to relocate.

I have had 2 days of sickness in the last year. I am obviously not planning on being sick but I’m getting extremely anxious about having any more sick days because of how it will look to future employers or potential employers if my current employer provides a reference.

Does anyone work in recruitment or recruit at their company and can tell me how many sick days would put you off a candidate? I have no idea!

I've honestly never had a job that's asked, but two certainly isn't anything to worry about.

I had 10 months sick prior to the job I’m currently in. But I’d gone back and was fine following it (nhs) so occupational health will ask about it and the circumstances and go from there, that’s what happened with me. Was high impact ward job to much more low impact community position so has made a big difference meaning I can still work and just about to move on again so going through occ health again as it’s within 2 years of the sickness.

good luck I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine

Sounds like you are far from concerning territory . In my workplace when we’re recruiting we don’t really look at anything 10 days or under. If it’s over 10 days we might ask why- but if the reason is covid/operation etc it wouldn’t impact someone’s job offer.

timoteigirl · 08/01/2023 15:51

Wouldn't it be discriminating? They cannot ask. People have ME, fibromyalgia, cancer, other stuff that requires regular medical treatment or appointments.

Been in HR for 20 years. Think I’ve only ever supported reversing an offer twice: one was still
off sick with no idea when they would be able to start and the other had had something like 300 days in 2 years.

astronewt · 08/01/2023 15:56

Two days is nothing. No one will care.

300 days off in 2 years? I'm not surprised the offer was rescinded

tappinginto2023 · 08/01/2023 16:00

2 days is nothing I would think less than average for a 'well' person with no health concerns.

I'm (touch wood) healthy and I usually take a couple of sick days a year as 'duvet days' because I would say the average is about 5 days off sick in the company I work for and I want to use my 'sick' day allowance (I know it doesn't work like that, but in my head it does!)

Had it been due to something like a serious condition which was now under control or in remission we would have thought about it again. But the pattern looked to be someone who exhausted their full pay (6 months) then went off for another 6 months as soon as their entitlement reset. 🤔

anomaly23 · 08/01/2023 17:59

@OnceAgainWithFeeling

I know someone who used to do this. She worked for the LA. She would take 6 months off at full pay, return for 6/8 months and then take another 6 months off and return.

More than 2 in a year

Serious illnesses and accidents do happen. Someone could have had cancer treatment, major surgery or been hit by a car for all you know.

The number of days in itself doesn't tell the whole story.

I had 10 months off and left while signed off. My new job didn't ask and still don't know officially!

Indeed. But it should prompt further questions.
