Enjoyable Children's Books That HAVEN'T Been Made Into Films / TV Series

I'm just thinking of books to read to my 9 year old that don't have a film or TV series attached to them.

Something I read the other day, about how the films and the merchandise attached to children's books has become more important than the actual books, has made me stop and think.

Most of the books I've read to my ds do have films based on them.

I don't think that's necessarily an awful thing. However, there must be loads of other overlooked and underrated books I could be reading too.

All suggestions appreciated Smile Flowers

The Chalet School
The Secret Island by Enid Blyton

BakingQueen14 · 13/01/2023 20:09

Nevermore/Morrigan Crow series by Jessica Townsend. I think it's going to be a film eventually but isn't yet and it's a brilliant series but not finished.

The Nowhere Emporium (already mentioned)

Anything by Tom Fletcher (also already mentioned)

The Polar Bear Explorers series. The narrators in all the books are girls but DS enjoyed them anyway. The rest of the main characters are mostly boys.

The Hatmakers/Mapmakers by Tamzin Merchant

Tim and Tobias, but good luck finding any copies that don't cost a fortune, there are the odd single books out but the whole series are so rare.

I loved them as a kid

Megan Rix has books about pets of famous people, each book stands alone so not in order, eg Winston and the marmalade cat, Florence and the mischievous kitten.

Also quite a few with dogs in them. Sometimes called pets in history series.

They are based around true people (and mostly) true pets.

Lovely, it's great to have all these suggestions.

Podkin One Ear. First in a trilogy. Absolutely brilliant.

Kittycaz · 14/01/2023 18:44

The summoner series by taran matharu.
Archibald lox saga by Darren Shan. And the saga of Darren Shan by him to (was made into a film but it was not true to the books and I loved those books as a child) If you LO is into fantasy.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/01/2023 18:44

Michael Molloy — The Witch Trade series, The House on Falling Star Hill.

Eoin Colfer — Airman

Chris D'Lacey — The Fire Within (although the later books in the series go weird)

Eragon maybe? There was a film, but I don't think people really talk about it because it wasn't very good!

Bogwoppit by
Ursula Moray Williams. Blows my mind that it's not a film. It has everything - plucky orphan, stately home, mad aunts and cute creatures.

UsefulSmartPrettyHappy · 15/01/2023 13:45

Thanks. It's brilliant reading this thread. I'm making a list of books to get out of the library.

I can't believe I forgot to put Strangeworlds travel agency on when I listed my suggestions. Glad someone else added it. There's an e-book Christmas short story to go with the series that came out at the end of last year too.

UsefulSmartPrettyHappy · 16/01/2023 09:33

Thanks, BakingQueen14 Smile

Does anyone else know Bogwoppit? I fee alone in my love for the book!

Memom · 16/01/2023 11:06

The boy that biked the world (3 books) and The girl that rowed the ocean. Both by Alastair Humphreys. Humorous, informative, thought provoking and real conversation starters we found.

Rocketpants50 · 16/01/2023 11:08

Definitely agree with Adventures on Trains, Beetle Boy, - anything by MG Leonard.

The Malamander series is great to.

Umbrella Mouse

Roar series

Rocketpants50 · 16/01/2023 11:13

Thought of a few more..

Katherine Rundell books - Explorers was a favourite.
Alistair Humphries - The Boy who Biked the world
Loki - Louie Stowell (not the marvel character)
Kick - football based but quite brutal, excellent book about how sweatshops and working conditions, based in Indonesia - might want to read first.
