What a car crash interview that was for Rishi

Did anyone watch the Laura K interview this morning? I've tried to see the good side of Rishi (first British Asian PM and all that) but I just can't anymore. I fully understand now why people think he's out of touch.

He obviously uses private healthcare, so why not just own up to it?

No proper targets our deadlines for his bloody five point plan he keeps banging on about and a complete failure to acknowledge the gravity of the situation with the NHS.

Not usually a fan of Laura either but it's the first decent interview I've seen with Rishi actually being properly challenged.

@Politicalwonderer, private healthcare is NOT the same here as in the US. It means something here if someone has rejected the NHS.

Yes, my experience of both has been very different!

PandasAreBlackAndWhite · 08/01/2023 14:46

@Dente there's an A&E at my local private hospital in Manchester. It isn't for everything though!

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/01/2023 15:00

Sunak brings nothing to the party. He has no leadership skills, no ideas and no personality. He confirmed today that he thinks he's far to important to do any of the necessary £18000 nhs jobs.

All he knows is money and how to get it for himself and hoard it.
He's a busted flush.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/01/2023 15:07

I saw a woman post online (she is a carer) and her partner works in a supermarket that he earned £1.50 more than her per hour yet he's in charge of stacking shelves and she's in charge with the lives of young children. It truly beggars belief.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/01/2023 15:09

One of Rishi's downfalls is that he truly evidently just has a massive blind spot. It was evident in the video of him with that homeless man. He just cannot at all relate to anyone who is not borne of wealth, status and privilege. He genuinely believes that society can be split into the haves and the have nots and that's how it should be because otherwise if you had you would have that you don't means you should stop moaning, get your uniform on and get to work now!

Antst · 08/01/2023 15:23

@VladmirsPoutine, shining example of professions that are traditionally dominated by women being undervalued. Women are expected to work for less.

Antst · 08/01/2023 15:25

@VladmirsPoutine, true, but that attitude (that some people are destined to be dirt-poor) is shared by many. If it weren't, we wouldn't have had over a decade of Tories.

The problem is that voters (Boomers) won't take responsibility. Dumping on Rishi is the easy part. Acknowledging that he's there as the result of a long series of choices is where things break down.

Blanketpolicy · 08/01/2023 15:27

It is easy for Rishi to avoid the question stating it is private information, if he confirmed he had private healthcare the follow up questions on his moral compass would have been much harder to answer.

LlynTegid · 08/01/2023 15:30

Rishi Sunak was prepared to dance to Dominic Cummings' tune when becoming Chancellor. The support for Covid did little for the self-employed, did not recognise part-time furlough until probably too late, and eat out to help out spread the virus because it forced you to remain indoors to get the discount.

The cabinet he has chosen shows he is a prisoner of parts of the party, as no-one with any freedom to choose one would have given a job to Gavin Williamson, Suella Braverman, or indeed most of the cabinet.

He is a man who is polite, presentable and articulate, and has personal morality, but that does not make him an adequate Prime Minister.

lbnblbnb · 08/01/2023 15:32

Main reason for bankruptcy in the US (or whatever they call it) is medical bills. Massive profits being made.

Off to watch the interview...

Antst · 08/01/2023 15:35

@LlynTegid, notice that you said zero about the young. They've been forgotten by the Tories because no one else case about them either. The self-employed did very well by comparison. I have an aunt and uncle who lived overseas and paid zero UK tax for two decades until 2018 and they got a £50 K grant to upgrade their camping ground business. My students who worked at the likes of Caffe Nero to fund their studies or graduated into the pandemic got absolutely nothing.

CoolSlinky · 08/01/2023 15:44

Utterly fed up with the in fighting in the Tory party - the right are now threatening to make things difficult for Sunak if he does do as they want by the spring. The Tories need to split into at least two parties, they are destroying this country with their in fighting - sunak will not to strong enough to hold them together - no one would.
How much more shit can this country take?

I am very grateful to people who use private healthcare if they can afford it and don’t clog up the NHS because it’s free.

No idea why he didn’t say that he has insurance for his family. No one would expect him to have the taxpayer fund his medical care. The more people who are able to afford move away from the NHS for their care, the better as it will reduce the burden on the service.

I agree as long as those people pay NI a as well they are in fact double paying and freeing up space for those on NHS .

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/01/2023 16:08

It is as simple as saying those who pay for private healthcare are freeing up space when the private healthcare sector is staffed by NHS doctors?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/01/2023 16:09

*is it as simple as...

swimlyn · 08/01/2023 16:10

Antst · 08/01/2023 13:01

@PeppermintChoc, I'll never own a house but people my age are expected to pay to keep houses for elderly in care. The older generations voted for this and they're first in line for care. They are not the victims in this situation. If they'd paid their share, we wouldn't be in this crisis.

@Antst

Please explain "if they'd paid their share".

Antst · 08/01/2023 16:14

@swimlyn, hadn't retired with decades in front of them for us to support, hadn't been handed our council houses at rock-bottom prices to build property empires to deprive us of housing and charge such high rent we can't buy, hadn't voted repeatedly for the party that has cut NHS and educational funding and imported hordes of incomers so that there's no need to spend money on training our own kids who end up in retail and hospitality. Just a few examples.

swimlyn · 08/01/2023 16:17

Ah. Right.

Thanks for confirming that you have no idea of the last 45 years.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/01/2023 16:17

@Antst Your point was clear as day to me!!! There's a reason why a pensioner/60+ bus pass can be used as voter ID but a student ID card cannot!

Antst · 08/01/2023 16:25

@VladmirsPoutine, yes, I find it very telling when it has to be explained!!

And thank you for reminding me of the ID issue. Makes my blood boil! We've been in various crises for well over a decade. It's only within the past couple of years that anyone has paid attention though because finally the elderly are having to deal with the consequences of their voting decisions.

My dad used to tell me an Aesop's fable about a man who is stung by a scorpion and says something like "I never thought you'd sting ME." Wish I could remember the name of it. Perfect analogy!

BigGreen · 08/01/2023 16:37

So annoyed that Rishi tried to blame all of the NHS problems on Covid.

newcovidisolations · 08/01/2023 16:38

Does anyone really believe Sunak would be told there is over 2 hours wait for an ambulance if he was paralyzed from the neck down from a stroke. He would be prioritized whether NHS or private. However has likely never personally experienced the NHS issues. Suggest he spends a day shadowing someone working in a&e!

We had the above stroke situation in November and had to carry a previously fit healthy relative (luckily under 50kg) to the car and to a&e, luckily only 5 minutes drive away. Had we not they would have been too late for clot reversing treatment. Since then they have spent 6 weeks as a "bed blocker" waiting for rehab whilst having no physio to learn to walk again

VladmirsPoutine · 08/01/2023 16:49

I don't think the issue is so much that anyone would reasonably expect Rishi to be waiting in A&E with his kids if need arose in much the same way I personally don't think the Secretary for Trade should be expected to get an economy seat on an Easy Jet flight to go speak to the head of trade for India or where-ever. It's more that as these people are ultimately charged with ensuring adequate care/protection of these services and looking at the dire state these services are in then there are questions to be answered. One good thing to come out of this is that people who hitherto could remain unbothered in their cosy bubbles are being affected and noticing it. You really shouldn't piss off the very people you expect to keep you in power - the tories know these people aren't the nurses using food banks after a 12-hour shift in A&E or the students without a pot to piss in. One of the main reasons why welfare provision has been very intentionally cruel for a very long time is very much because those aren't the people the tories are bargaining on to keep them in power.

BigGreen · 08/01/2023 16:53

I don't know, because he was so keen to say"I'm from an NHS family" to show he (supposedly) values the NHS. In that context I don't think it's bad to ask him if he uses the NHS and expect him to give an answer. It's another thing if he had chosen to be private about his life across the board.
