If you were to start a 'diet' tomorrow

What would you do ?

Third baby in last 18m. Heading for 41. 7lb overweight but 14lb is my goal.

12 weeks

I'm really rubbish at sticking to anything. Have done 2x before after previous children just by using My Fitness Pal but I wouldn't say I ate particularly healthy. So would like to improve that.

I already have an exercise routine and am hoping to get back running as well.

So what would you follow ?

Also - think of sensible swaps
Skimmed milk instead of semi (or semi instead of whole) for example, or think of ways you can cut out extra empty calories - less sugar/milk in tea/coffee, diet drinks instead of full sugar, fry light instead of oil etc

Eat higher protein meals/snacks if you can as well!

Emanresu9 · 08/01/2023 15:05

understand that 90% of weight loss is in diet and only 10% in exercise. Don't fall in the trap of upping exercise and then eating accordingly because you earned it.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/01/2023 15:09

Low carb and calorie counting. Calorie counting helps me regain control of portion sizes and low carb helps me to choose better, less processed food.

I also eat full fat foods like yoghurt or semi skimmed milk because they’re more satisfying than low fat, taste better and fill you up more. Eat less but eat nice enjoyable stuff. The calorie difference between full fat Greek yoghurt and low fat it minimal when you realise how much it fills you up in comparison so you’re less likely to snack.

paintitallover · 08/01/2023 15:14

Add more fruit and especially veg, to most of all meals.

Keep to wholemeal mainly

Reduce all of most sugar and drop most puddings

Cut out or reduce alcohol

Eat enough protein

Semi or full fat yogurt rather than sugary skimmed.

Passthecake30 · 08/01/2023 15:38

I track on Mfp for a couple of weeks as that encourages me to reduce snacks and pull back portion sizes.

starsinyourpies · 08/01/2023 15:45

Highly recommend this podcast! Echoes lots of the above like eat lots more veg, fermented foods, less processed food, intermittent fasting. Drink more water too.

By starting tomorrow, you would have already failed.

DIETS DO NOT WORK.

Why do you think the diet industry is literally worth billions?

Shit like Slimming World just gives you disordered eating.

If you seriously wanted to start a new eating habit that would last a life (because if its not for life, the weight would come back on) then why not start now? Is it because you want that one final blow out meal? Like you are never going to eat an enjoyable meal ever again? Come on now. Totally unsustainable and you have already then in your mind made these foods 'naughty' and 'bad' and when you eventually eat them (and you will) it will completely throw you off.

More veg, protein. Movement I enjoy (and is practical)

Less snacks, but not cutting them out.

No deadline.

THIS,

INCREASE veg, increase fruits, increase water, move your body in ways that make you feel happy rather than as punishment.

Do it because you love yourself, not because you hate your body.

Yes! I listened to this this week & it was really interesting, well worth a listen OP.

I take some of it with a pinch of salt because he's also trying to flog 'Zoe' his incredibly expensive programme, but a lot of what he said made sense, particularly around processed 'diet' foods and how diets are a massive con.

I've added some kombucha, probiotic full fat yoghurts & kimchi to my daily diet which has been painless, I just need to wean myself off old habits round processed food though. Lets see how it goes.

mumda · 08/01/2023 16:17

16:8 works in that it stops you snacking in the evening.
But you have to work out whether it'll work for you.

cheeseandbiscuitsplease · 08/01/2023 16:19

Keto. Low carb. Will fall off. Keto custom plan online is fantastic.

illiterato · 08/01/2023 16:22

key for me is not aiming for perfection. Just find something I can stick to that works and aiming for slow and steady loss.

In late September I tipped into the overweight category having gradually gained weight since lockdown, and decided to address it. Starting weight was 74kg. Target weight around 65kg. My method was

  • don’t eat before midday other than tea on demand and a milky coffee mid morning
  • eat main meal at lunchtime
  • lighter meal in the evening
  • dont drink calories- I’ve cut down alcohol by probably 80-90%. Other than that and one coffee it’s tea, kombucha and water.
  • 3 5-8k runs a week, 2-3 weights sessions.

i haven’t stuck to these rules religiously and I do eat sweet treats most days tbh but I’ve lost 6kg since end of September and it feels like something I can do forever. Put a bit on over Christmas and now losing it again.

MeinKraft · 08/01/2023 16:22

Nutracheck app is very good.

IHeartGeneHunt · 08/01/2023 16:26

I've got 8 stone to lose, I'm trying Nutracheck app, I find it easier than MFP. 8lbs down since Xmas day.

Yes! Listened recently and found it fascinating and so logical and sensible

downnew · 08/01/2023 20:25

I'm only 5 days in so far but my 'plan' is to drink more water, cut out snacks, make my portion sizes smaller and think more about what I'm actually eating. I never eat breakfast and haven't for years, I just have a couple of coffees through the morning then lunch around 12-1pm and dinner around 6-7pm.

Planning to start a little exercise this week- I really dislike it so I'm not putting too much pressure on.

LoveMyADHD · 08/01/2023 20:30

The only thing that works for me is the Militant Diet!!
monday- Wednesday: protein only

  • breakfast - boiled egg and cucumber
  • lunch- tuna only
  • Dinner - tuna and one boiled egg
thursday - sunday- more relaxed you can add some carbs

i lost one stone in two weeks , lots of energy and feeling positive

good luck x

PetitPorpoise · 08/01/2023 14:31

Low carb bootcamp on here.

I agree, since last April I've lost 1.5 stones, gone down two dress sizes and kept it off. It was simple, quick and effective. I've had two holidays since along with Christmas/New Year and eaten and drunk whatever I fancied but then gone back to low carb straight after and gone back to my stable current weight of 68kg.

mahrezzy · 08/01/2023 20:49

I AM starting tomorrow. Ugh.

No sugar, limited white carbs, more protein and whole foods. I don’t drink anyway, but I do tend to binge on chocolate / carbs after my son goes to bed so I’m stopping that. I finish my evening meal by 6:30pm (I eat with my 4 year old) so if I don’t eat breakfast until nursery drop off (9am) that intermittent fasting too (14 hours fast, 10 hour eating window).

I’m going to do this for a month and see how it goes. I’ve only ever lost weight by dropping my carbs to 80g a day but I struggle to do that as a parent.

I also workout every day (a bit of cardio, strength work) and do weights at the gym a couple of times a week.

specialk9 · 09/01/2023 17:34

Hope everyone who started today got on ok!

I had

Tea x 3
1l of water so far

Breakfast - Greek yogurt + banana
Lunch - Wholemeal roll with 30g cheese & salad
Dinner - Jacket Potato (no butter) , chicken breast carrots and peas.

Not the greatest but I have food to use up so I'm being mindful of what I choose until I go shopping on Friday.

My treat will be a biscuit with another cup of tea.

Calories 1178 (I am 5ft so aiming for between 1200-1300 per day)

High fat low carb. The of you felt up to it combine with time restricted eating - really just not eating until hungry on a morning and not snacking into the evening.

If I get my blood sugar levels under control (so in turn insulin levels), the weight drops off.
