Dc taken out of medical centre list

Dc1 has just started Uni in September. He wanted to get a prescription cut his inhaler but was told he wasn’t in the list anymore.

Anyone knows why this could have happened? Could the fact he is now at Uni means he was automatically assumed to find a GP there? He didn’t get registered there on purpose as he spending half if his time at home anyway…. So the news came as big surprise to him (plus the worry because now he has run out of his inhaler…)

If it's known he isn't living within catchment he can be automatically deducted.
He should register at a surgery by his uni.

Did your dc inform his gp surgery that he was moving to university? If so, the gp surgery probably assumed he has moved away and ds-registered him.

You will either need to re-register at your gp surgery or find a new one at university. Usually you can remain on a gps books up to three months - over three months and it’s considered you’ve moved away.

You can get emergency supplies of medicines, so it may be worth talking to your local pharmacy.

How would they know he’s moved away unless he/you told them?

Has he sought treatment at uni area? He may have registered there by default, ticking a box on his enrolment paperwork, if there is a health centre onsite. Both our dc are still registered at home gp.

ManyNameChanges · 08/01/2023 09:21

Nope no one told the surgery.
He didn’t sought any support at his Uni town
And he didn’t tick any box to say he wanted to be registered there as he had been told it was much better to keep his existing one (plus it’s a really good one!)

Really at loss as to what happened.

But it’s nice to see he could stay at our surgery.
He’ll be back at Uni next week but if he can re register when he is back home he will.

He had been waiting to be back home to get a new inhaler too 🥺🥺

Sometimes gps surgeries can re-register you over the phone, if you’re already on their books and they have your details.

Riverlee · 08/01/2023 09:31

Also, gps can send prescriptions electronically (apart from Wales and Scotland) so his home gp could send the prescription to a pharmacy in his uni town.

Thanks @Riverlee .

He needs to register at a Dr near his uni, some unis will do this automatically.

He can see his old GP as a 'temporary resident' I've done this when visiting relatives. He could also use a walk in centre and might even be able to get an inhaler from a pharmacy.

It's odd that his old surgery didn't give him the options when he spoke to them. At the very least advice on how to get his prescription, but also that he could re register or register at one near uni. Maybe it's better he uses a new surgery as they don't sound very competent.
