12 week baby sleeping too long?

I’ve posted here loads about DD’s not great sleep. Her longest stretch was 3 hours, and then hourly waking from 3 am. I was prepared for the 12 week regression, and indeed we had a night of waking every 45 min-2 hours at 11 weeks. Suddenly at 12 weeks, without any input from me, her sleep seems to have organised: she goes down at 9, sleeps til 4, and nurses, and sleeps til 8. Her wake window is 1.25 hours and she naps 1:45 between.

She is breastfed on demand but I am terrified of SIDS, as I thought that was linked to deep sleep in young babies? We follow all other safe sleep practices (cool room, sleeping bag and no blankets or toys in cot, etc) Should I be waking her to feed? My breasts are so full I’m lying here listening to her breathe and wriggle about for a couple hours anyway. DS didn’t sleep like this until much much later so I don’t know if this is normal?

10-12 weeks is actually often the best sleep of the first year for babies, with long stretches of sleep. This is a really normal pattern you’re describing and not something to worry about. If she’s over birth weight there’s no need to wake to feed. Try and enjoy it before the 4 month regression is likely (not inevitable but it is common) My DS did the pattern yours is once at 10 weeks then didn’t sleep as long a stretch again until 19 months.

12 weeks is also the point where they develop the hormones to know night from day, which will also have an impact.

This might help

That sounds good to me- your body will adjust.

Enjoy the sleep while you're getting it!

Sounds normal- try to enjoy it and your boobs will adjust after a few nights

Thank you everyone, lying here listening to her with boobs like boulders! Have tried to enjoy some of it but mostly just listening and watching her to make sure she’s alright 🫠
