What time does your three year old go to bed and get up ?

Bed time with my almost three year old just keeps getting pushed back...she never seems tired when I put her to bed earlier and stays awake for ages.

She dropped her naps a few months ago, because any time she would nap, even for a few minutes, she would not sleep until 10 pm or later.

I can manage to get her to sleep by around 9 nowadays with no nap, but I think that's still too late for a 3 year old. She gets up at around 7:30-8 am.

She has just started a new preschool and needs to be there at 8:30 am, so something has to change.

Do I just start waking her earlier and eventually she'll go to sleep earlier too ?

Any advice appreciated..

Dc4 is 3.5 and most days is in bed 7-7.15pm.
Sometimes He is up between 6.45-7.30am, depending on how tired he was or what kind of day he had but weekdays I have to wake him as we have the school run then preschool. Weekends he goes to bed a little later and wakes himself at about 8am. He hasn’t napped since about 13 months though. Does she have a nice relaxing bit of downtime leading up to bed? Does she self settle? I would definitely wake her on the days needed.

Yes wake her up earlier and she'll sleep earlier in the evening. Sounds like she doesn't need a huge amount of sleep but in the normal range I'd say.

At that age my girls were always in bed around 1900 but would wake 0500-0700

Asleep by 7pm and up at 6.30-7. She's just gone four but has been in this routine for a while now.

NYresolutions23 · 07/01/2023 22:15

6.30pm if a pre school day and that's a struggle as asking for bed at 5pm! Non Pre school 7pm.

Gets up 7.45am when alarm goes off if not would be 8.30am ish.
Except of course weekends when no ine needs to be up so they wake an hour earlier!

Bedtime is 7-7:15, wakes for the day at 6 if we are lucky. Also wakes at 9pm, 10.20pm, 11.30pm, 2am, 4am. It's so fun 😕

When mine were three they slept 9pm to 8:30 am. Any changes we attempted just led to less sleep overall, so we left it. Luckily we lived very close to nursery and now to school.

6.30pm bedtime here, we had to bring it forward massively when we dropped naps because she just got overtired otherwise. 6.30am ish wakeups, but can be 5.30 or 7.30 depending how her bladder is doing.

My just turned 3 year old goes to bed at same time as his 5 year old sister, any time between 6 and 7 (normally aim for 6.30). He sleeps in until 6.30/7.00 most mornings although it can be later. He does still wake in the night a couple times but is being assessed for sleep apnea

My first is a night owl too. Before she dropped he nap, she was constantly trying to push bedtime later - at 2.5 it was often between 10pm & midnight, but we got it closer to 10pm when she dropped her nap between 2.5 & 3 years.

We were waking her 7am every morning (we began this from 10 months) but just couldn't get her to go to sleep any earlier. she didn't really adjust her internal clock until she started school just after she turned 4. Now, she is asleep between 8 & 9, & if we sleep in & don't wake her up (we still need to on school days), she generally gets up herself between 7:30 & 8am.

You might find preschool makes her more tired & you can get her to sleep earlier, but I think if she can naturally wake herself at 7:30am, then she's probably no too tired, & 10.5 hours is within the recommended range for that age. If you start waking her earlier, I'd try just 10-15 mins earlier every few days , & if you can, try move her evening meal slightly earlier in line too, so that she might think it's bedtime sooner.

We used a smart lamp & created a 'sunrise' routine in our daughter's room too, to try make morning wake-up a bit more gentle.
