If you aren’t particularly frugal, what is your weekly grocery spend up to now?

We enjoy good, home cooked meals and are fortunate not to need to be especially careful, but I think a hardly lobster and steak every night. We mostly cook from scratch, never order takeaway, and rarely eat out. We’d cut back on other areas before food.

Our weekly spend is now £180-220 for 2 adults and 2 teens. That’s for a weekly Waitrose delivery (including kibble, sardines, eggs and sweet potatoes for the dogs), meat from the farm shop and a Co-Op top-up shop. Yikes!

Anyone else’s food shop coming in around this?

Our delivery from Sainsbury’s is around £120, then at least £50 in top ups / treats. Doesn't include dog food and I also spend £40 a week on school meals. We have take away or eat out once a week.

MaverickGooseGoose · 07/01/2023 16:54

That's for 2 adults and 2 kids who eat almost adult portions.

bobbytorq · 07/01/2023 16:55

About £200 for me and two teens. Dog food is another £60 per month and I often top up from the deli when I'm passing. I can afford it but it's about a 50% increase from a couple of years ago🙄

Monthly budget £550. Me, DH and DC(6). DC has hot lunches 4 days a week at school. DH sorts his own lunch at work. He’s also often away for work so I just cook for me and DD probably 6-8 nights a months. I tend to only cook once and we all eat together.

Used to have a lot more leftover to stash!

This covers who gives a crap loo and kitchen roll every 8-10 weeks (big box of tissues when needed). Smol dishwasher tablets and washing capsules on subscription. Milk delivery x 2 a week.

Obviously some weeks are harder to stick to budgets than others. This week I had to order bin bags, and it’s much better value to buy a 3 pack at £25 😱 but I know DH is away for a big trip this month and we’re also away for a weekend.

We have a midweek delivery saver for Sainsbury’s so I get a delivery every week. There’s a co op locally that I stop at for bread etc.

We eat probably more veggie food than most households, so that does make it cheaper - I haven’t upped the budget in ages, but I definitely see it not going as far. I buy yellow sticker meat/fish and use the freezer quite well I think.

Most toiletries come out of this too although we try and not have loads on the go if you see what I mean.

Separate fuel budget.

blackheartsgirl · 07/01/2023 16:57

About 120 a week which includes all toiletries and pet food. There are 2 adults (me and dd20) and 2 teens.

hattie43 · 07/01/2023 17:01

Probably £130 / £140 weekly which is £60 pw for 2 x dogs , 1 a giant breed and £70 / 80 for me to include , cleaning and toiletries . Top up prob £40 in Waitrose for magazines / treats . Then treat the parents to takeaway monthly so another £60 or so then multiple meals / coffees out with friends .

MyPenIsHuge · 07/01/2023 17:01

£40-50 a week for an adult and a child. Child has free school meals due to age so it's just breakfast and evening meals for him.

watchfulwishes · 07/01/2023 17:15

TwoMagnificentLabradors · 07/01/2023 15:44

LucyWhipple I’m the same as you. We are both working full time, kids still need lots a of time and support, dogs need time too. I just don’t have the time to think too much about it.

It doesn't take any more time to buy or cook slightly cheaper things. You only have to think about it once and once you have shifted your approach it is done.

If you have the money spare it is absolutely fine to carry on as you are, of course, but it is not a time issue IMO.

If you prefer to just spend more to continue eating your preferred food, just say that.

MargaretThursday · 07/01/2023 17:17

£80-£100 main shop and about £10-£20 top up for 3 adults, 2 teens.
We don't drink alcohol which makes a difference and tend to get supermarket own stuff.
That's more than doubled in the last 18 months though.

InFiveMins · 07/01/2023 17:28

2 adults here and 1 dog. We are spending £150 a week on average. It is madness.
I should add that includes alcohol, toiletries and cleaning products.
I'm determined to bring the amount down.

Brokendaughter · 07/01/2023 17:53

About £300 a month for everything, including meat/fruit/veg from riverford or local farm shops.
We do grow quite a lot of our own fruit & veg though & don't drink alcohol, plus I make stuff like cheese, bacon, ham or sausages so we don't pay nearly as much for them as other people might.

That's one adult & one teenaged boy.

I didnt add wine as have some left over from Christmas, my DD and her BF buy their own food as dont really like veg, tend to stick to peas and sweetcorn, etc, they also get the washing tablets and dishwasher tabs, plus loo roll

stopbeeping · 07/01/2023 18:45

Yes we spend about 230-270 a week depending on what we get
It's brutal atm

I used to spend about the same at Ocado but with a lot more stuff and a lot better ingredients

It's now too expensive to just get everything from the one place so I've started to use Asda and Sainsbury’s but I miss Ocado so much

Crikeyalmighty · 07/01/2023 18:46

@Jenasaurus I love those thrive meals- bang some extra cauli or broccoli and they are great for dieting!

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2023 18:46

My DS and his DW spend less on food than I do, with the grocery shop but eat out quite a lot so overall spend more than me and they also pay 200 a month on a raw food diet for their 2 whippets.

Bestcatmum · 07/01/2023 18:49

I Iive on my own and I'm vegetarian. I dont eat junk food, I just buy ingredients for cooking and a bit of quorn.
My shop today for this week was £50. I,d normally spend no more than £25 to £30 a week. I was horrified.

spuddel · 07/01/2023 18:49

We are two adults and 18yr old ds, so three adults really Grin I used to spend around £120 a week Waitrose and buy meat from local butcher. Put the same shop in my basket this week and the £120 jumped to £165! That always includes a bottle or two of wine though but it's a £45 jump for the same shop a couple of months apart.

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2023 18:50

Yes, I checked the nutrition content as I am diabetic and even though they have some carbs, I only have to keep under 130g a day so am well under even with them and so filling, I am also useless at making omelettes and the unearthed ones take 2 minutes in the microwave, no mess and really tasty, sometimes if I have enough calories I sprinkle some grated cheese on, with the help of these meals I have stuck to my healthy eating without effort and lost over 4 stone, my diabetes is now also in remission and my visceral fat is in the normal range (it was excessive!) I was a size 24 and am now a size 10/12, its amazing what a health scare can do, its just taken me to the age of 57 to work on myself

Bestcatmum · 07/01/2023 18:51

And that doesn't include my cats food which I buy online. I dont drink alcohol either.

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2023 18:52

If you shop with Waitrose there is a 20% off voucher you can use with Coupert, actually that app has saved me loads of money, I also use Honey but Coupert has saved me a lot more, I recommend downloading it even if you book a later delivery slot as have already done your food shop this week.

Whatyagonnadokatie · 07/01/2023 18:53

This week we were over £100 for 2 adults and DS7. But I will be doing some batch cooking, and we have FIL over for a roast on Sundays.

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2023 18:54

Thinking about it in recent weeks its things like Lemsip and fibre gel racking up the cost.

LBOCS2 · 07/01/2023 18:57

We budget £1,000 a month for 2 adults, 1 teen and two children. This includes a takeaway each Friday, a crate (or two) of reasonably priced wine and food shopping including toiletries and animal food. It has basically doubled in the last three years.

BroomHandledMouser · 07/01/2023 18:58

Around £120-£180 per week. 2 adults 2 pre-teens, a cat, a dog and a chicken named Martha.

If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll nip into the farm shop for some naice things
