Hi I’ve got citropram, has anyone else had citropram for ocd and anxiety and if it worked? I’m so scared to take them and I don’t know why

Citalopram?

Amazing. life changing for me and worked far better than any other AD I have taken.

Jessican · 07/01/2023 15:39

@SeeminglyAbsurd yeah sorry misspelt. I don’t know why I’m just so scared of taking it I think I’m scared of it not working for me, did it cancel out physical anxiety symptoms and bad thoughts, if you had them?

It was quite a while ago so really hard to remember the details but I know it worked really well for me, reduced my OCD and made me a lot happier.

What’s the worst that could happen? If you try it and it doesn’t work the dr will be able to prescribe an alternative. It’s got to be better to try than stay suffering as you are?

Anxiety sucks. I hope it works for you OP and it can get you to a better place Flowers

I was in your position 4 months ago and I cannot believe the difference it has made to me. I was in a mess, palpitations, panic attacks, OCD type thoughts. I really really did not want antidepressants but I knew I had to do something.

I am on 10mg and the difference in me is unbelievable. Physical symptoms have gone as have the thoughts and anxiety.

I felt awful for the first 5 days and was on the verge of stopping but by the sixth day the nausea and fog started to lift and within 2 weeks I felt back to my old self, something I have realised I haven't felt for a very long time.

I know it isn't the same fir everyone but you have nothing to lose in trying and if it doesn't work you can try something else.

doodlepoodlenoodle · 07/01/2023 16:06

I've been on them for 15 years, after years of trial and error with all the wrong antidepressants and I can honestly say they've saved my life.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 07/01/2023 16:57

A wonder drug for me

HeyMicky · 07/01/2023 17:09

Miraculous. Genuinely improved my anxiety within 48 hours, like switching on a light

I've shared this before on here, but my Dr uses a great analogy: imagine trying to climb over a wall. You can get your nose over but can't heave yourself up. Then someone comes along and puts a shoulder under your bum and gives you a boost. Then you can scrabble over on your own. That's citalopram

Jessican · 07/01/2023 18:17

Thank you all so much, ive being started on 20mg but I hear you’re only supposed to start on 10? So I think this is a bit scary too

Yes, it’s worked very well for me and I’ve never had to increase the dose. The only issue I have is if I forget to take it for a few days or run out, I get awful withdrawal symptoms. Feels dizzy and lightheaded, almost like vertigo so IK very careful not to miss any now.

Wotrewelookinat · 07/01/2023 18:36

It worked really well for me with PND and anxiety. I started on 20mg and felt so much better after a few days and back to normal after 2 weeks. I was able to reduce to 10mg after a few months, but stayed in it for years and didn’t have any side effects.

MyMachineAndMe · 07/01/2023 18:49

I take 20mg a day, as does dh and my dad. I feel normal, as in, no different from before but without the spiralling worries and falling into strange, anxiety related rabbit holes.

It did not work for my nephew; he takes sertraline (sp?) instead.

Sillybanana · 07/01/2023 22:55

Changed my life, really brilliant for me personally.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 08/01/2023 08:00

I’ve been taking citalopram for about 8 years now for OCD and depression. I was lucky; they were the first AD I tried and they worked. Not instantly like they do for some people, but slowly the intrusive thoughts went away, and it’s only when I look back now that I see just how bad it was.

I’ve had to increase my dose over the years and they didn’t work for my anxiety disorder so I take a different medication for that as well.

My husband was started on sertraline and then tried venlafaxine, neither of which worked for him. I encouraged him to ask his GP if he could try citalopram and it was like a miracle.

KangarooKenny · 08/01/2023 08:04

My DH started on 40 mg about 15 years ago, now on 30mg.
Fear of taking them is due to what you have been diagnosed with, don’t let it win. Take the tablets and have faith in the medicine.
They were literally life saving for my DH.

amershamfc · 08/01/2023 08:07

It's brilliant. I started on 20mg. It took about two months of forcing myself to take it. I have no idea why I was so resistant. I can only assume it's part of anxiety and the self destruct part of my brain resisting it. I found I could fight that by taking it in the evening so it was the last thing I did before bed.

lifeinthehills · 08/01/2023 08:10

I've found it great at a very low dose. I've been on it a year and now trying to come off it. Will see how that goes! I never wanted to take this sort of thing but it was definitely worth it.

Jessican · 08/01/2023 08:42

Thank you everyone, what was peoples side effects?

Not so much now, unless I think about it, but when I first started taking it I couldn't stop yawning. Really big, wide-mouthed, long yawns.

Also, and I'm sorry to be crass, it made it more difficult (but not impossible) to reach an orgasm.

Jessican · 08/01/2023 11:48

I took one this morning so far i just feel a bit sick and spaced out

OP posts:
Theredcow · 08/01/2023 12:10

Sick and spaced out is the same as I felt. Take it before bed then the worst will happen while you are asleep.

You may feel quite unwell for a few days but stick with it. I didn't feel able to drive for a few days but it will ease and belive me the relief you will get from your anxiety it worth a few days of feeling awful

Sillybanana · 08/01/2023 12:11

Thank you everyone, what was peoples side effects?

At first I felt really stoned, for the first couple of weeks, also didn’t feel like eating.. and after that I didn’t have any side effects atall, just started to feel better, Less anxious, much more social..

Sillybanana · 08/01/2023 12:12

As previous posters said it is a bit harder to orgasm but you still can

Mumsfret1976 · 08/01/2023 12:45

I just wanted to add that it took around 4 weeks for me to feel better on it so don't be disheartened if you don't feel any improvement for a while.
