Having a single bed as an adult

Six months ago I moved house and my bedroom is now rather small.

As much as I love my big bed, it does take up too much room now and I am seriously considering getting a single bed.

Is this weird as an adult? I am 52, don't have a partner but presumably could change my bed if I needed to in the future.

I am just after more breathing room in my bedroom which a single bed would offer.

What do you think?!

I would get a single and have more space in the room, but keep the bigger duvet so it's lovely and cosy.

A trundle bed! Single with another single under that can be pulled out to make a king size/double!

I would find a single a bit too small personally, but a small double would be fine.

Is it a one bed house? If not I'd just put furniture in the second bedroom and keep a bigger bed in yours. Personally I'd hate to sleep in a single bed.

Depending on the space, you could look at a king single or small double if you wanted a bit bigger than a single (eg I'd want a bit bigger as the cat would take up most of it). But if you're comfy in a single and that works best for you, go for it! There are absolutely no rules about what size bed anyone should have. Entirely your choice.

I'd happily swap. I find a single to be plenty of space as a single person. I only got a double as DS was often coming into my bed when I last needed to buy one. Saves on washing if you can fit more in with a bedding wash.

I have a small double (with double bedding on it) which give me more space to stretch out (I move a lot in bed sometimes)

After my dm died, it took df about 3 months to change to a single bed. Housekeeping is much easier - washing, making it, vacuuming underneath. 15 years later, he’s still happy with the decision.

I moved into my flat with a kingsized bed, because the previous flat had a massive bedroom.

after many years, I swapped to a double to increase space in the bedroom. I miss my king size bed still!

One adult in a single bed has more space than two adults in a double.

If a single works better and you can change it in the future then go for it. I would do as a pp says and consider small double or king single (this is new to me!) first though. My (young adult) DC has a small double with a double duvet and that works well. I have moved and have a king size bed and am considering changing to a double.... if only I hadn't spend so much money on the bloody frame I would have done it already!

I have a very small bedroom and a single, and I wouldn't get a single unless it's just not possible to fit a double into your bedroom. A single is less comfortable, you can't spread out.

But if you do end up getting a single bed definitely use a double duvet.

I wouldn't go single. A small double is a nice
Size. Feels much more roomy compared to a single but will free more floor space then an actual double/king

I wouldn’t go single as I can’t turn over in my sleep, I need to wake up and move my bum over. Three quarter bed sounds ideal.

Exactly! I don't understand how it could be not enough space unless you were used to a bed longer than a single/double.

I didn't think it would be a popular move but was pleased to see a few thought it would be ok😀.

My current bed is 6 foot wide so if I went down to a 3 foot wide it really would offer up more space. And a four foot feels like neither one thing or t'other.

I don't think I move around much in bed - I always seem to just stay on my side of the big bed, as it were. It was a great bed when the kids were small but times change.

I shall ponder some more. Thanks again.

I'm a similar age and love sleeping in a single bed particularly if it's against a wall, it's so cosy. I've two singles in a spare room and occasionally will sleep in there and love it.

I've always wanted a built in cabin bed so I have the wall, a low bed guard on the other side, and a curtain to draw across. Completely enclosed and cosy.
