What does it mean please?! I'm seeing it more and more. Does it mean someone's put their foot in it?

Google says - an instance of deliberately dropping or tossing aside one's microphone at the end of a performance or speech one considers to have been particularly impressive.

Example -

What @Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink said.
It means you 'smashed the hell' outta whatever you were saying. Anyone trying to retort or have a come back will struggle!

Ah that makes sense - thank you both very much :).

It's a bit of a grim notion, really.

ApexPredator · 06/01/2023 23:03

Is it making a comeback?! I haven’t seen it in ages but it can be very funny if it’s someone whose view would be authoritative and who has good timing.

I remember Obama using it and yes he’s pretty hard to argue against!

I find it a bit cringe but the other above posters have described it well. It's like shows over and you absolutely killed it.

I don't think it ever went away. Loved it when Obama did it.

I think it’s a celebration really, of skill, humour - it’s a bit of fun.

I can see why the self-appreciation aspect of it might seem grim/cringy in a certain mindset, but there’s nothing wrong with loving and celebrating ourselves IMO :)

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 07/01/2023 10:23

@EmmaEmerald same! Think it's always been here although I'm from culture that fully embraces and loves a mic drop 😃so my view may be skewed.

It's probably never gone away but I'm a bit slow on the uptake!

Thanks for further explanations :)
