I can't believe it's January and warm enough to not need the heating on!

I'm really thankful that this makes the energy bills easier but not so happy about what this means for global warming. If January is this warm, what will July '23 be like? 😬

DM lives in souther Spain , she's barely touched her wood pile despite normally being ready to order another load.
They are rarely in single figures which is highly unusual but becoming more noticeable over the past two winters.
It worries me that we've not needed the heating on for more than two hours today.
To add we're not the kind of folk that go cold to save a few quid. Heating is an essential for me, cannot function without!
Though saying that I'm mightily relieved that we're not paying out what we budgeted for this winter (so far!!)

LuckyPeonies · 07/01/2023 03:46

This is considered a winter heatwave. The Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Belarus, Latvia and Lithuania have recorded their highest January temps in history. I read summer temps are forecast to be hotter than anticipated, drier as well. Everything seems to be deteriorating much faster than expected.

healthadvice123 · 07/01/2023 07:12

Over the last few years I've Always found fen a colder month

healthadvice123 · 07/01/2023 07:15

@SproutsLCerVEGNoEgg the last couple years been windy a lot more nights
Amount of times I have had to go and pic up my recycling or not been able to put it out the night before
Currently been awake last couple of hours due to the wind waking me up and listening to stuff blowing around the streets

lobsterkiller · 07/01/2023 07:45

I'm in Yorkshire, it's currently 12c. This is ridiculous. I mean great for heating bills but worrying regarding the climate. I've been just using my log burner in the evening. I'm only using about 4 logs a night, it's enough to heat the large room and hold the temperature until the next night.

Kalasbyxor · 07/01/2023 07:46

Everything seems to be deteriorating much faster than expected. Many climate scientists have been forecasting a much more rapid deterioration than generally suggested for quite some time. You're right, Lucky, it is really worrying.

Cheese, a rapidly heating climate is not so much about what the weather feels like to you as you cycle home from work, but about its impact on ecosystems and organisms, crop failures and food production, public health, coastal and inland flooding, weather systems and land erosion. And that's just in this country. You can't seriously consider global heating through the lens of whether you're coping at 40°C in Wolverhampton.

greennavy · 07/01/2023 07:48

I predict July will be warm and August wet and dull 🤣

Mine's on the timer but barely clicking on as it's already warm. It's not helping the washing dry which is the only problem!

Yeah we could really do with a dry day, I'm very behind on laundry

It's the jet stream isn't it? Russia is having lower than average temperatures so it just depends which side you are on.

RampantIvy · 07/01/2023 09:56

It isn't warm enough to not need heating here. Today we have wind and heavy rain. The heating is on because I don't want a cold and damp house.

ByTheGrace · 07/01/2023 10:06

It's 8⁰C feels like 6⁰C here, not warm, blew a gale last night.. It was only a couple of of weeks ago when it was absolutely baltic, we dont get a lot of frost as we are on the Gulf stream, yet we got weeks of it. We are lighting a fire every night, trying to keep the heating off. Very odd.

My bedroom thermometer says 15C currently and that's with no heating on today.

My heating is firmly on at 15 degrees!

As for summer, bring it on! Those long hot days... 😊

Tulipvase · 07/01/2023 10:40

And yet it was probably 18 degrees colder only a month ago. I’m not sure that it is fair to say that just because it’s mild now, it will be even hotter in the summer. Other than the general rise due to global warming of course.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/01/2023 10:41

It’s very worrying.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 07/01/2023 10:59

I opened the doors as I was so hot in the house to cool down a bit but the outside temperature felt no different, it’s very worrying.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 07/01/2023 11:36

We always leave the front door open to air the house/get fresh air in the summer.
We’ve been doing this for the last week and thought nothing of it until reading your post and realising that it is early January!
The door is wide open as I type, sun streaming in the windows and I can feel a cool graft. It is just like a spring day here!

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 07/01/2023 11:37

It's not over yet, snow predicted in a fortnight! Sad

RampantIvy · 07/01/2023 11:46

It's currently 10 degrees here and still pouring with rain.

BiasedBinding · 07/01/2023 11:47

Cold and raining and windy here

Though we’re in the south of England where it’s always warm and everyone is feeble of course

Same, outside! Warm inside.

Mañanarama · 07/01/2023 12:42

I’ve just hung all my washing out on the line! Lovely sunny day with a mild breeze should get my towels dry enough to just need a quick tumble later. Make the most of it while it lasts!

mydogisthebest · 07/01/2023 13:10

East Midlands. 11 degrees and sunny today. It was pouring earlier and pretty windy but the wind has dropped and it's dry.

Have only had to have the heating on for an hour or so in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening.

I have been just wearing short sleeves indoors during the day indoors. I don't feel the cold that much but do normally wear thin jumpers in the winter.

It's great for our heating oil bill but very very worrying. Looks like things are going to get bad much quicker than lots of people thought.

ByTheGrace · 07/01/2023 15:20

You all must live in The Bahamas, we've just burnt through £500 of oil in 1 month.
I've got my coat on, DD and I feel the cold very badly, she has a health condition which is adversely affected by the cold.

AuntieMarys · 07/01/2023 15:27

9 degrees here in the North but sun out. No heating on yet today.
It will go on 4-6pm.

We had ten days last month where the average temp was below freezing. At one point my central heating (thermostat set to 18° overnight/21° daytime for health reasons) was about £10 a day.
Still on the same settings, yesterday cost me under £3..

It's 10° right now - going to drop a little over the next few days but predicted to be 12° on Tuesday.
I'm in the north of England.
