Does anyone have one of those SAD lamp alarm clocks?

Do they help with regulating sleep patterns and feeling more alert when you wake up?
Which would you recommend? They also seem so expensive so I want to make sure they work before investing.

I don't feel more alert when I wake, but I feel better because I wake gradually instead of getting a shock from the alarm.

Same - I cannot function without it in the winter. Makes being woken up much more bearable.

I don't use the sunset function

I’d agree with this.

I don’t use mine any more as I wear an eye mask so it obviously didn’t make enough of an impact on me.

That said, I was thinking about using it during the dark mornings because I hate lifting the mask to darkness. But that’s obviously not the point of them!

I do actually feel more awake but I think it's because I've been gradually awakened by the glow and then the noise - rather than being jolted from a deeper sleep and waking up dopey. It's been such a good investment, I love mine!

AlannaOfTrebond · 06/01/2023 21:50

I used to have one and it definitely helped me wake up more easily.
The actual clock was a bit of a pain to set the alarm on if you don't get up at the same time every day, and also flipping ugly.
I now have a hue bulb in my bedside lamp and have an automation set for it to gradually get brighter for 20 minutes before I want to get up instead. Works just as well, easier to set and no ugly alarm clock.

My partner has both the clock and a lamp to sit in front of on dark mornings. Just gets them thro the Nov - Feb period. Have a look on ebay. The sad light I found on there and didn't pay a lot. Clocks on there as well

Thank you. Do you mind sharing which ones you have? I'm tempted by the lumie ones but £80 odd for an alarm clock seems very steep!

Lilithslove · 06/01/2023 22:14

@Pedallleur i will check ebay out. That's a good idea!

I have one and yes the gradual awakening is good. But I actually like the gradual dimming of the light at bedtime just as much - the light gradually getting dimmer sends me off to sleep so easily.

I have a Lumie. I use the sundown and sunrise, it really helps me.

timetorefresh · 06/01/2023 22:18

I got the cheapest lumine one on an Amazon deal. Follow on camelcamelcamel they regularly get reduced. I prefer my older cheaper one to be honest. You could change the length of the sunrise on that one so it didn't wake me too fast

EmmaEmerald · 06/01/2023 22:21

I had one but didn’t find it made any difference to anything. I used to wake at the first sign of light.

Lilithslove · 07/01/2023 00:56

I've found a second hand lumie 150 on ebay going for the same price as the cheapest one new so snapped that up. I'm looking to giving it a go.

dointhedo · 07/01/2023 00:59

I received one as a present and use the sunset feature every day, it really helps me to get to sleep.
