ADOS

Posting for traffic as I know it belongs in SN.

DS age 7 is due to have an ADOS next week, online. So virtual I am guessing.

Any experience of this? Seems crazy to me, surely it needs to be in person?!

Hello, a remote assessment called Bosa, has been developed during COVID for ADOS-2 user practitioners to be able to still assess whilst socially distancing. It does not replace ADOS and it is a very simplified version. Depending on the child’s communication and developmental level they will be doing one of the four modules available. It takes about 14 minutes. You should be briefed in advance to know what do you need to do during each activity, where to place camera..etc, you also should receive resources in advance. Don’t worry, these all simple activities and the professional will guide you through it. If the result will be inconclusive, they should do an ‘in person’ ADOS-2 too.

Hello, thanks for your reply. It was today and it was the only ADOS they were doing, with an SALT. No guidance beforehand other than to have a few toys ready! I wasn't impressed, the SALT asked questions about what was going on with DS because she "couldn't see below table level" and also "he seemed to make good eye contact, hard to tell because it's online"!!!

ADOS - 2 has a very rigorous protocol and you can only use the resources from the kit, hence it is a standardise assessment. Each toy in the kit has a very specific purpose and the way we use them matters a lot. We have to go through all activities to be able to score reliably.

If you are not happy with the result or you feel it does not reflect his needs, you can appeal and insist a proper ADOS-2. It is either that in person, or the BOSA remotely is acceptable. Good luck!

We didn't get a result! Do you have a link to the guidance for what you're referring to please? I insisted on an in-person school observation so that will be going ahead regardless, so I don't think I need to appeal, but what we had was clearly not an ADOS, even though I was told it was one.

Are you a HCP? I will be querying this with the neurodevelopmental service as it doesn't feel the right way to go about things at all. What could I say?

To be clear, the only instruction I was given beforehand was to have half a dozen or so items/toys of my DS'. So nothing provided from the SALT, and she didn't know what the toys were before the video call. She asked him to create a story about the toys he had in front of him, and when he didn't want to, she asked him to find 5 objects in the house - any five.

@Bernadett71 what happens to the scoring if the child, at some point, refuse point blank to complete the ADOS or won't even engage with it, out of anixety for instance ? thanks
