Temporary lactose intolerance?

Has anyone suffered from this after an illness?

We all had some sort of bug over Christmas - I was sick once and felt really nauseous for days. Now whenever I eat any dairy products I end up in a lot of pain, terrible wind and loose stools ( sorry for TMI)!

I read this can be temporary and that you should avoid dairy for a few weeks until the gut heals. Just wondering if anyone had this and how long it took until things were back to normal?

It's quite normal for milk to trigger vomiting and loose stools after a tummy bug. DD used to get a bug regularly at nursery and we had to avoid dairy for a good 5 days afterwards or she'd start vomitting again. I don't think it's lactose intolerance,

My husband had this after a bad stomach bug. It did eventually resolve but took a few weeks.

There's a particular type of stomach bug that triggers temporary lactose intolerance. I have a friend who had it.

The good news is that it is temporary.
The bad news is that for him it was nearly 2 years.

My DD did when she was a baby. Eventually was put on lactose free formula which instantly resolved the issue. She's fine with dairy/lactose now

My ds did when he was 3 months old. Had to have lactose free formula for 3 or 4 weeks. He was fine after that and never had it happen again.

Thanks all.
Definitely seems to be dairy that's causing it - the other day it was triggered by Mac cheese and today by ice cream. I'll maybe need to just avoid dairy for a bit until my stomach settles. Just hope it doesn't take 2 years like PP said!

Try one of those probiotic drinks like Actimel or similar. They introduce good bacteria back into the gut. Have one, leave it a couple of days and then have another. See if that gradually helps.

It might still take a week or two though.

Very common after norovirus.

I think I tried dairy again after a month and it was fine.

My kids have been ‘temporarily’ lactose intolerant for a year and a half following a tummy bug. Taking hope from the 2 year post 🤞🏻🤞🏻. Although we’re lucky that there are loads of lactose free alternatives it can still be a bit of a pita, especially when travelling. And I feel bad for the kids looking longingly at the foods they used to enjoy 😭. Hope yours clears up soon @moomoosmama
