Suggestions of where to take DD for a weekend, on her 15th birthday.

DD turns 15 soon & we want to go somewhere for the weekend. We've been to London previously & she wasn't keen (too loud & smelly! She has ASD). She's not a huge fan of cities & prefers the coast or countryside, but we're struggling to find somewhere to go just for the weekend. We live in the midlands & can stay overnight in a hotel, on the Saturday.

She's having a tough time at school & with friends, so wanted to do something nice.

Any good suggestions, please?

I looked to take my daughter away for a long weekend when she was 15, we went to Ibiza as it was much cheaper than anywhere in the uk, it was lovely

Adventure Parc Snowdonia is a fabulous base for lots of North Wales. Their Hilton hotel is small but lovely, there's a man-made surfing lake for water sports, lessons available, indoor & outdoor adventures. Lots of beautiful walks and villages surround, short drive to the coast. Really special place.

I see someone has already suggested this www.aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne/short-breaks/?_ga=2.56671210.1959510162.1673008095-550551511.1673008095

We stayed in the cheapest accommodation and it was lovely.

Cardiff bay might also be a nice option. Boat trips and walks and quite a bit to see but quiet. You can get the boat taxi into cardiff castle too. Good choice of hotels and places to eat.

YogaLite · 06/01/2023 13:23

Put a trip to top of Snowdon by train on the list for warmer months (probably not running to the top in winter months).

If u are near Somerset on another occasion, pop over to Glastonbury (town, not festival), historic and quirky, walk up the famous Tor.

Also Cheddar Gorge.

I’d really consider York! No hustle and bustle like London. Lots of things to do, a cat cafe, museums, pretty gardens to just sit with a hot chocolate or cup of tea. Quaint streets and not at all loud or smelly. Can do activities like the boat that runs along the river Ouse too. If you’re driving Knaresborough isn’t too far from there and that is truly stunning.

Whatliesbeneath707 · 07/01/2023 07:45

Thank you.
Yes, i hadn't thought of York but it sounds lovely.
I think she finds the bigger cities overwhelming, but likes to explore new places.
Snowdon looks great too - thank you.

I misread Snowdon as Swindon and wondered what on earth was happening! 😂

Norwich is lovely. Smallish city, historic, river, quirky shops, independent restaurants, bit of studenty vibe in places. My DD 16 loved it ( similarly not keen on London )

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 02/02/2023 23:12

Ironbridge Gorge is very accessible from the Midlands, very quiet but tourist friendly and the countryside is really beautiful.

MoomiMama · 03/02/2023 21:44

how about a spa hotel in the countryside? This one was in the papers and looks amazing www.manorhousealsager.com/

Whatliesbeneath707 · 07/02/2023 07:51

Thanks everyone. I will add these to the list.

I was thinking Warwick and the castle too.

If do just that then op and take her to the beach and or country.
I can never recommend Pembrokeshire enough.the only national coast park.absolutely Devine.the coast.the walks.the peace.the niche places to stay.i can name a few if you need.
Also Somerset or Dorset.
My cousin has Somerset rentals if you want me to ask or pass you on her details. You can go then to her siblings farm if you want!
she lives among the hills and it's perfection.pricey but perfection.

Please would you mind sending me details of this, it sounds ideal for me and my dd.. Similar situation to OP! Thank you

Oh yes, Warwick are including castle worth a look - also Stratford upon Avon. Although as you’re in the Midlands this may be next door!

Also, I took my dd on a Severn Valley Railway trip during one of the less strict lockdowns and we combined it with a night in a premier inn so we didn’t have too early a start. She liked that

Buxton and around - Buxton is a pretty little town, with beautiful Derbyshire dales surrounding. I had a lovely weekend up there.

mondaytosunday · 07/02/2023 11:44

I took my 17 year old daughter to Bath in August and we had a lovely weekend. We stayed in a beautiful hotel near the Holburne Museum (well worth visiting) and just walked around. Has afternoon tea in the Pump Rooms and tried to recognise where Bridgerton and Persuasion were filmed. It was tourist season and really hot but we loved it.

I'm in The Midlands. Have a look at Ribby Village. It's lovely, I've been a few times for a weekend break. There are lodges of all sizes and a hotel. Something for all ages, tea rooms, animals, paddle boats a beautiful Spa and pool. Close to Lytham as well which is a lovely seaside town.

Whatliesbeneath707 · 08/02/2023 05:47

@kateandme thank you! It looks beautiful- she would love it.

What about the Cotswolds? Broadway or Chipping Campden are my favourites

crazycycle · 08/02/2023 06:10

Slightly further afield but what about the New Forest? Wild ponies roaming, lovely countryside walks, pub lunches, cute shops and villages. Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst or Lymington with its marina. Ben Ainsley a local and often spotted in pubs in the latter.

PortiasBiscuit · 08/02/2023 06:21

Harrogate is lovely
