Polyester sofa

We're getting a new sofa from John Lewis, and so torn on the fabric. Is 100% polyester a bad idea? I'm worried about the static build-up. Alternatively, we could get a poly mix, but that's 50% more expensive.

I think our current sofas are all cotton. Anyone got a poly sofa who can comment? Thank you!

Vast majority of furnishing fabrics are polyester, it's a good option due to being washable, non fading and hard-wearing.

I've always had a weird thing about cotton so all our curtains and cushions and things are cotton. Maybe I've been missing out? Is your sofa polyester then?

No we are stuck with old leather sofas from the noughties! I spent a lot of time looking at fabrics and samples for other decorating projects. I'm not the first to jump to synthetics either but they have a place and there are some really high quality, tactile upholstery fabrics. I've never noticed static from anyone's sofa. But I've seen a lot of worn and faded cotton covered sofas. Best to make a decision on the fabric sample whatever it's composition.

I've gathered lots of samples, and like the shade of a poly one. But the feel does seem a bit different from our current ones (less cold? A sort of 'flat' temperature) which made me hesitate. I've requested more samples, cotton and/or linen, but predictably so much more expensive, almost double the price!

I just thought I'd add in some information. Polyester in and of itself being a synthetic fabric does have more flexibility to it, and it does last longer - however it also adds microplastic issues to the environment for you and the family. Not everyone seems to react to this, but it can cause skin/muscle/respiratory issues. I found after removing polyester I don't get thirsty as often, but I do seem to burn through cholestrol a lot faster. It's like something got halted when I had polyester in my life. I'm hoping it's the missing piece, it seemed to get rid of my food sensitivities too (which was weird, cause I've heard those stick with you for life). Anyway - most synthetic fabric is exposed to heavy metals, chemicals, flame retardants, etc, that can/will cause problems in the long term. Most people who find this to be unacceptable end up switching to things like cotton, silk, wool, and other sources that are more natural - but even then not everything's perfect all the time, some sources like to mix their material with synthetic fabrics to get a special feel.

I'd suggest looking into microfiber/microplastic impact, as well as impacts of polyester on the skin long term and determine if that's acceptable for your family before settling on polyester long term. I hope some of this helps.
