DH blood test results

Hi all,

Firstly, I have anxiety about health stuff, and yes, I am trying to get help for that.

DH had routine blood tests done yesterday connected with a recent flare in his anxiety. He has never had a blood test before this. He's 41, overweight, barely drinks alcohol but did drink more in the past.

He had a scheduled call with the doctor this morning re:anxiety and the results were not yet back.

The doctor then called him back at lunchtime to say his liver results were 'a bit high' and could they rerun the test next week and also arrange an ultrasound in the next few weeks. DH asked if he should be worried and the doctor said it's probably nothing to worry about but they like to check.

I'm terrified. Also I'm pregnant, which just makes it all feel worse. And I was widowed with my first husband a few years ago, and I worry, a lot.

I don't have any exact results, figures etc.

Does anyone have any experience? Our GP practice is generally 'on the ball' but I am worried by the speed of this.

They frequently re do blood tests as it’s sometimes a blip on the day.

I had exactly the same thing. My liver results were a bit high and the GP phoned me. I was told to lose weight then have bloods done again. There is a scale they go off for liver results, I can't remember exactly what it is but my GP considered my result to be a bit on the high side yet my friend, who lives in another area, had the same result and her GP said it was fine.

Sorry forgot to mention, I was also sent for an ultrasound and everything was fine.

If you have the nhs app your blood tests results should be on there. There are links provided so you can look up what they mean

Dh lft was raised after he'd had weekend away drinking more than usual. It was fine on retest.

There's a common thing called Gilbert syndrome that can cause skewhiffy liver results (britishlivertrust.org.uk/information-and-support/living-with-a-liver-condition/liver-conditions/gilberts-syndrome/)

It's pretty common and harmless but if he's never had a liver function test, might not have been picked up til now.

So that could be an innocent explanation

Squabbledee · 05/01/2023 17:48

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is very common, so it could be to do with that.

Thank you for your kindness, all. It's been really helpful.

There are lots of things that temporarily raise liver enzymes, like alcohol, paracetamol etc.
People who drink a lot of alcohol can end up with liver damage like cirrhosis and fatty liver disease. The ultrasound is to look for those two things.
The liver is capable of repairing itself if the thing causing the issue is stopped.

Eightiesgirl · 05/01/2023 18:55

Try not to worry. I worried myself into a frenzy thinking I had some kind of liver disease but I was perfectly fine. It was the first time I'd ever had blood tests and I was terrified. As a previous poster said, liver results can vary from test to test.

HairyKitty · 05/01/2023 19:03

Non alcoholic fatty liver, caused by being overweight. Can be reversed by dieting well and exercise. Dr may request a liver scan to confirm if the next lot are also high
