Compensation claim for burns - worth it?

My nephew is on a zero hours contract at McDonald's. He has suffered quite nasty burns on his arms and hands at least two occasions and has not been offered any sort of training or PPE to prevent this happening again. I am horrified tbh so the motivation is not just cash. One of the burns has left a scar on his arm. Is it worth trying to claim compensation? If so any recommendations for companies to approach?

No my nerves are all intact Thankyou very much?

All his training will be logged in his online portal which he will have the log in details for, there will also be training sheets in store that are done by the managers

Begoniasforever · 05/01/2023 17:13

Oh op, how much training does he need to know the fryers and ovens etc are hot and will burn him if he touches them . It’s a level of common sense that is expected at 16. Christ it’s expected at 5.

how does he not know?

Get him some oven gloves, that will give the staff a laugh.

Well they could have tried wrapping him in cotton wool?

Highly flammable. 😂

He’s a 16 year old young person who received no supervision, training and instruction. He 100% has a claim. They are negligent.

Contact a solicitor. You have until 3 years after his 18th birthday to claim.

I'd at least expect there to have been some online training at the start, if only how to be more careful and also what to do if you or a colleague are burnt. If I were him I'd explain it's happened twice and he'd like some training or discussion regarding safety.

If those facts are correct then yes he would have a claim. However an organisation like McDonald’s will usually have a robust training and supervision procedure. I’d be very surprised if there was any substance for a claim, unless there has been clear negligence such as faulty equipment etc.

In regards to the comments around common sense, this cannot be taught and cannot be used in ignorance from an employer, even if the actions of the young man appear naive that needs to be managed appropriately.
