Best supermarket for fresh produce?

Sorry for the dull question!
Since Sainsbury’s took the dates off their longevity of their produce has gone right down hill.
Asda near me are poor quality fresh too.
So where should I try? Aldi, Morrisons or somewhere else?
Just don’t have money spare for throwing things away or time for daily trips. I just want to get decent things that last a week like they used to…

near us it is Morrisons, well Booths is amazing but too expensive for regular use

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/01/2023 08:55

Whole Foods aka Whole Pay-check
Only in London though

pizzaHeart · 05/01/2023 09:00

I would say M&S but it’s quite expensive.
Depending on what you are after some things are not bad at Aldi but most of their produce won’t survive a week. We usually do mixture of Aldi, Morrisons and Tesco but it’s location based decision.

Unfortunately all supermarkets took dates off fruits and vegetables and all are equally crap around me 😎 I did switch to Riverford as their veggies do last well over 2 weeks including fresh spinach but it is pricey

Nolongera · 05/01/2023 09:01

Proper fruit and veg shops if you can find one.

willowstar · 05/01/2023 09:03

Waitrose for me, but they too have removed the dates.

Kualma · 05/01/2023 09:03

Waitrose. Sainsbury’s fruit tastes like water. I find Tesco quite good sometimes too but rarely visit nowadays

thunderstruckk · 05/01/2023 09:03

Booths or Waitrose for by us - and our local butchers. Their veg and fruit seems to last the longest but it's just harder to get too!

LadyKenya · 05/01/2023 09:05

Farm shops, if you have one near you, and you can afford to shop there. M&S, I think the fruit, and veg is good quality.

Fairylightsandtea · 05/01/2023 09:05

do you have a little fruit and veg shop anywhere near you? I’d been walking past mine for years thinking it’d be expensive as hell, went in finally and it’s fab. Cheaper than supermarkets, you can pick out what you want, no pesky plastic and it’s great quality, really lasts

TheFlis12345 · 05/01/2023 09:08

We have deliveries from Tesco and the veg lasts for ages. We used a pepper and carrots last night that were bought mid December and still have gem lettuces with a best before of the 11th December that still look fresh!!

GoneToday · 05/01/2023 09:08

Thanks, unfortunately no Waitrose for miles here and probably too pricey to do regularly.
I could make a trip to M and S but not ideal weekly. I think I’ll try Morrisons today and maybe investigate farm shops too - that’s a good shout.

The dates thing is annoying not the specific dates but I assume it means they can't manage stock rotation due to this.

I often get stuff from Ocado eg cherry tomatoes- needing them last a week for lunches and they are squishy before we start the week.

Same with grapes.

Not sure what the answer is

They are still used for cooking but not so good for specific needs of asd kids.

DelilahBucket · 05/01/2023 10:40

We switched from Sainsbury's to Ocado for this reason. Prices are almost identical for most products so no big increase, and if I'm not throwing veg away all the times it's better value. Aldi can be a bit hit and miss. I'll buy there if I know it's going to be used quickly.

I love Lidl fruit and veg. We eat really well and it doesn’t cost the earth. They do organic and seasonal things as well as good staples.

MrsMontyD · 05/01/2023 12:27

My local Sainsbury’s has always been terrible for fruit and veg, it's like any kick it into the store. Morrison's is the best near me.

klinker · 10/11/2024 06:58

if possible grow your own veg no garden no problem plant in containers water as needed 👍

Savvyshopper81 · 10/11/2024 07:05

For us it’s Lidl. I’ve ditched Ocado because I ended up binning loads of fruit & veg that was either squashed or only lasted a day, ditto the Asda near us, but our local Lidl seems to have such a huge turnover of stock that the fruit & veg is pretty much always fresh & tasty. I also buy from the farm shop but it’s pricey so only once a month.

Gingerkittykat · 10/11/2024 08:01

I've got a local farm shop that is not a pricey destination shop with a cafe, a lot of their veg is from their own farm and are a lot cheaper than the supermarkets and some is from a wholesaler.

I would definitely avoid Asda and I agree with others that Morrisons is good.
