3yr old DD sent home from Pre-school with asthma yesterday....spoke to GP last night who advised I went to A&E but I didn't(various reasons) just closely monitored through the night....thus morning slightly better more chesty cough 6 puffs has helped but definitely won't last 3-4 hrs....do I go now? Don't want to be a time waster if it's not life threatening?

Is there an urgent treatment centre rather than a&e. I know nothing about asthma but if you’re worried she needs seeing, you know what’s right for her and not and asthma shouldn’t be messed about with.

Paeds nurse. Yes, you need to go if not managing 4 hours.

I’d try and get a GP appointment, not least as I think it would be quicker and you may come home with something worse than you went to A&E with!

My three year old with asthma is allowed up to 10 puffs, did GP advise capping at six? In my experience with A&E they will typically just give another 10 puffs and try and stretch her out for the next 3/4 hours and then send home with the asthma plan and advice to see GP within 24 hours - unless we have arrived in the midst of a full blown asthma attack.

The GP told you to take her, they know better than us randomers on Mumsnet. You should have taken her last night.

Go now it's possibly it's quietest time

LakeFlyPie · 05/01/2023 08:08

Do you have a community respiratory nursing team? Ours was brilliant

Ylvamoon · 05/01/2023 08:09

Go! As rightly advised by your GP.

6 puffs not lasting 3-4 hours is definitely an A&E situation.

OrlandointheWilderness · 05/01/2023 08:16

Go. What was the reason you didn't go last night?!? That is the sort of advice you should definitely follow, especially with asthma in young children.

BabaH · 05/01/2023 08:18

Thanks I'll go this morning...just needed reassurance that I wasn't being a time waster.

I would take them to A&E especially since GP advised you to do this. I understand it's hard to go in the evenings/overnight, but asthma can turn very serious very quickly. If your child is taking that many puffs and it's not helping for very long, it's not a good sign and I would take them as soon as you can. My husband has asthma and has been told in the past that if he's using his inhaler for attacks more than 2 - 3 times a week (several puffs each time) then he needs to go get checked as this can lead to lack of oxygen very quickly. Hope your little one is ok and feels better soon!

Go - been in your position before with a child
who is susceptible to viral wheezes and we’ve always ended up needing more inhaler and/or nebulisers. Our London hospital no longer advises 10puffs at home - up until Sept last year that was the maximum we could go to at home but they now want children under observation in A&E if they need more than 6 puffs.

Once she’s better, it would be worth having a review with the GP and asking if you can have a stash of steroids at home. It means you can administer some yourself and can mean you avoid a trip to A&E.
