Man singing/shouting into microphone at 3am

georgarina · 05/01/2023 05:33

He's done it a few times but not every night and always 2/3/4 AM but never a predictable schedule :(

But tonight kids and I were woken up again at 3am by a man walking up and down the street outside with a microphone singing (sounds like some kind of religious prayer) and then periodically breaking it off and SCREAMING into the microphone. Terrifying to be woken up by.

It only lasts about 20min/half an hour so too short for police to be able to show up, but it means everyone in the house is up at 3 and can't get back to sleep (plus the screaming really freaks the kids - and me - out).

We live in a small flat so can hear it from every room. I saw other neighbours turning their lights on and looking outside, but I don't know them.

Any thoughts on what to do?

I got woken up by the same thing in the early hours on holiday in Morocco in the old town.

Scared the shit out of me the first time. But I was in a Muslim country, so it's to be expected. The man sounded so angry!

Some man driving round my town here and doing it at 3am, I'd not be happy!

ImprobablePuffin · 05/01/2023 08:39

Gosh it's very tricky because if I recall the news correctly there are now more Muslims than Christians in England and no one wants to offend any other religions but 3am is a pisstake. Of course one would expect this in a predominantly Muslim country (do they call to prayer in the wee small hours?)

Theeyeballsinthesky · 05/01/2023 08:46

This is the latest religious breakdown according to the census

Religious breakdown

less then half of ppl in the uk identify as Christian but it’s still over 27 million; 3.9 million identify as Muslim

I don’t think we’ll be getting calls to prayer broadcast yet!

as for that bloke OP - definite reporting to the police

FrostyFifi · 05/01/2023 09:05

They do but it's at a reduced volume, at least in the country I lived in.

The UK is definitely not a majority Muslim country though and no-one should be making a racket at 3am.

Who cares? Religion isn’t the main driver for how people live. We are a capitalist country with established working hours for the majority. I’m surprised this twat hasn’t been beaten up.

Apologies, my recollections of the news were wobbly at best

Theeyeballsinthesky · 05/01/2023 09:55

No worries :) it’s only cos I had to read it recently for work that it stuck in my mind

rainbowstardrops · 05/01/2023 10:01

Oh how awful! Why can't he do it outside his own bloody house?

I don't think that matters. Religion should never be allowed to interfere with normal life. I am not religious at all so would ally this to all of them

ImprobablePuffin · 05/01/2023 11:06

@Livpool I totally agree. I'm not religious either. I was just musing really like where's the line between respecting others' religion but not having it impinge on your existence also. I'm not talking about the 3am thing here that's just out of order. I'm probably rambling and not making sense tbh

Your recollection was ‘correct’ of the narrative pushed out by certain groups who selectively manipulated the census results, and then reused by people falling for the exaggeration

Very strange. I take he is not local if he is turning up in a car? Has anyone confronted him whilst he is doing it?“

Seriously OP, do not confront him!

rainbowstardrops · 05/01/2023 10:01

Er... because it’s a call to prayer!

He’s going around the neighbourhood to wake up other Muslims so that they can pray.

If you’re not a Muslim, then you should be in his eyes, which is why he doesn’t care about waking anyone else up!

Tomikka · 05/01/2023 11:25

2/3/4am do not fit into the timings of the call to prayer, the first of each day is at dawn, and would also be consistent (the time does change - by minutes, not hours)

www.edarabia.com/prayer-times-united-kingdom/

With the blacked out number plates and unsocial and inconsistent times this will be some form of harassment

Tomikka · 05/01/2023 11:25

(PS add ‘and the shouting’)

ShodanLives · 05/01/2023 11:46

If you know in advance that he's going to do and and when then contact the police.

I know what you mean. It wouldn't really bother me if they did it at noon (though shift workers and parents with napping babies/toddlers might rightfully disagree). But only if all religions would be able to do the same.

Perhaps us agnostics and atheists should be able to do it too!

Bizarre to do it in the middle of the night

Apologies! I didn't realise this. Thank you for educating me Smile

All religions can do the same (in accordance with their religion)

For Muslims it is a literal call, for Christian’s it’s ringing church bells

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_to_prayer

Agnostics could run with any denominations call to prayer to hedge their bets
Atheists wouldn’t see the point

georgarina · 05/01/2023 13:52

He did it again this afternoon and then he walked into a house opposite.

Wtf.

He won’t give up! The call to prayer is very important to them.

Doesn't give him the right to wake everyone up in the middle of the night.

Of course it doesn’t but it’s happening all over and people are frightened to speak up for fear of being accused of a hate crime.

I believe residents in Llandudno had problems with it but I’m not sure if it’s been resolved.

MugginsOverEre · 05/01/2023 15:26

Could be three things.

A genuine call to prayer (by a Wanker)

A fake one meant to rile people up against Muslims (by a Wanker)

Or some TikTok Wanker making videos of him being a Wanker.
