I want to move out of London in the next few years. It should just be DH and I (assuming both DCs have left home).

Budget will be £800k. Ideally a detached 3 bed house.

I want to be in a town with shops and stuff going on. Ideally near water - estuary or sea. Near country walks.

We will be 55 and 60 but still working part time.

Whites table or Deal

Floralnomad · 05/01/2023 01:36

That should obviously say Whitstable

Canterbury.

Eastbourne or anything in between it (Lewes as an example) and Brighton offers the best of both worlds. Beautiful abundant countryside and coast, Brighton is a very cultural and varied city, Eastbourne is well equipped when it comes to most things, good and easy access to London. Beachy Head, all of the Seven Sisters and Cuckmere Valley are beautiful and quite an expanse.

Swanage, Dorset.

Thank you. A train ride from London would also be on my wish list as I'm sure we will want to visit friends etc

I would choose Brighton if it was me. You could probably get a three bed for that there. Loads to do and you have the South Downs and the sea on your door step. Arts festival, great food, shopping, theatres.
Brighton isn't for everyone though. It does have a certain vibe that a lots of people on mumsnet don't like

Emsworth is lovely. Has a an amazing butcher! Real community town with events etc, great train links for teenagers etc.

You couldn't go wrong moving there

Lymington. By the sea and the New Forest, easy train up to London from Brockenhurst.

Agree with Lymington- that’s a healthy budget for a 3 bed and there is a train from Lymington to Brock which has a fast train to London.

Lymington has a market town vibe with a sailing community, lido, coastal walks + nice restaurants, shops etc.

Also, on the edge of the New Forest so plenty of walking.

West Sussex had a good train line into London Victoria.

I'd also look at Rowlands Castle near Portsmouth, it's a large village with a train station on the Waterloo line.

I live on Hayling Island which I love, but you'd probably get a bit more than 3 beds for your 800k - probably a 5 bed here!

Wareham, Dorset. Direct train to London, easy access to all the amazing beaches and great walking in the Purbecks.
