Anyone else utterly exhausted by 8pm?

2 kids aged 8 & 6. They don't do loads of after school clubs so are generally at home from 3.30 with us.

Dp and I both work FT around the kids (so make up hours once they're in bed etc). This isn't every night but sometimes will have to work until 12pm / 1am (maybe once every 2 weeks).

By the time the kids are getting ready for bed at 7 I could totally pass out with them. And at 8pm I'm ready for bed myself, unless I have to work or go out in which case I'll generally get a second wind.

Does anyone else feel like this?

No kids at home, work FT compacted hours over 4 days and I get ready for bed soon as I come home. Cannot keep my eyes open after 9pm. So hats off to you 👏

I feel tired even earlier than that. DC are 7 & 9. I could easily go to bed at 6pm.

I was exhausted until I started taking high dose iron and a heavy duty vitamin tablet. So much more energy now!

Ravageur · 06/01/2023 17:42

The trick I find is alto stay on your feet as much as you can. Definitely DO NOT sit on the sofa under a heated throw 😁

TribeD · 06/01/2023 17:44

Constantly knackered, but I'm anaemic and have a long covid diagnosis so despite vitamins, iron tablets and regular infusions, I'm generally in bed by 7.30.

It sucks to be honest.

Tiggy321 · 06/01/2023 17:47

Yes My rule is don't sit down until I have done everything for the evening (other than eating!). I leave the house at 7.15am and sometimes not home til 7pm. My kids are young adults plus a 17 year old. I am always in bed before them. I aim for 9.30 but faff around a lot so it's always 10/10.30! I don't feel too tired tho tbh until I get into bed.

Heated throws are deadly! 🤣

I'm knackered permanently but also have ADHD and chronic pain in the mix. I'd sleep forever if I could!

One thing to mention, I don't think I could cope having to work in the evenings to make up time. Personally I'd rather have my DS in after school so I can finish work at 5ish then at least I'm switched off for the evening.

Are there other ways you could try to plan your work days to avoid evening work. We find it helps if one does the morning (I start work at 8am) but then finish to do after school pick ups.

2reefsin30knots · 06/01/2023 17:47

Yep. I'm up at 5.15am. Do an hour of work at home in the morning, get ready and hassle DS to get ready. In work at 7.30am. Spend all day with children (Special Needs Teacher- breaks not a thing). Home between 5-6pm. Sort DS out. Passing out tired by 8pm.

TabithaTittlemouse · 06/01/2023 17:48

Maybe worth going to the Gp to see if you have any deficiencies?
Are you drinking enough? Eating well?

I generally find that the more that I do, the more energy I have so on work days I get up at 5, an hour in the gym, 12 hour work day and then in bed for ten. On days off I get up at 9, do a bit around the house and walk the dogs and I’m shattered by 8.

Happierwithouthim · 06/01/2023 17:52

Me too
Single mother of two, their dad has them two evenings a week until 8 so I use this time for exercise. I work 4 days 7:30-5:30pm and one 7:30-1pm.
Alarm goes off at 6am I want to be in bed at 9pm like Tiggy it can be 10:30 though as dc 12 & 9 don't want to go to bed but calling them repeatedly in the mornings. I find the more I do the more I'm able to do.

I read that and thought... a chinchilla needs a walk?! Maybe I need to go to bed now 🤣

ilkleymoorbartat · 06/01/2023 18:10

Ive had my bloods done and all are ok apparently.
It's very true about the busier I am the less tired I will be. I find the hours between 3.15 and when the kids go to bed utterly stultifying. They're a mix of just hovering around the kids whilst they do a bit of homework / reading, and trying to do some general household chores.

When the hell do people find the time to sit down and properly properly relax? I don't feel like I can just put my feet up and stick the tv on when the kids are about because I should be doing stuff with them. But then it's a perpetual feeling of not getting anything done / nor relaxing.

Kids 4 and 6 and I work four days a week and yep, that sounds about right for me apart from the going out second wind

Roselilly36 · 06/01/2023 18:57

Yes, me too, often in bed by 8pm, I do usually get up 5ish though.
