Wish guests / pets / husband would all just fuck off now!

I'm just having a rant, feel free to ignore, or join in, as preferred.

We've had lots of guests over Christmas, and the current pair are in the middle of a week-long stay.

I've come to realise over the years that my absolute limit for tolerance of guests is three days. After that (even sometimes before, if I'm tired) I start to feel hemmed-in and overwhelmed, so I withdraw to the bedroom all day on the pretext of work.

I often do have work in these circumstances, or will find work to do, but then it's even more annoying, because the constant noise and activity in the house drives me bananas.

This irritation then extends to the pets and my husband, who I currently wish would all bugger off forever and leave me in peace.

I can't stand to talk or engage with anyone, there's nothing left to say. We've done the small talk, the catch up, the setting-the-world-to-rights evening. I don't want to talk to anyone at all for at least a fortnight.

Everyone is perfectly polite and tidy, but their helpfulness means things aren't put back where they should be in the kitchen, and everything is slightly out of whack.

It's got to the point where even the sound of people sighing or drinking tea makes me furious.

I have realised in the past year that I'm probably ND, and am awaiting assessment, so this could be contributing, but maybe these feelings are perfectly normal?

Either way, I am determined that in future I am going to be more direct and clear about visitors. Three days max, and if they want to stay longer then I will absent myself instead. Luckily my work is vague and irregular enough that I should always be able to make up something plausible.

Three more days to go...

We also live a flight away.

Why can’t guests come here and use our home like a hotel and bugger off for the day? Why do they expect to be entertained? They have use of one of our cars and we share for the duration yet still they want us to tag along and accompany them for yet another visit to the damn castle!

motherhubbard12 · 04/01/2023 23:56

There's obviously something very wrong with me. One night is enough!!

xogossipgirlxo · 05/01/2023 11:51

It's actually funny when you find out how many people hate hosting guests, and yet we still do it. Because iT's FaMiLy 🙄

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/01/2023 11:59

I love hosting. For up to three days.

I am interested in the other side of this though - do the guests who stay longer actually enjoy it? Do they in turn love having people at theirs' for long periods?

I don't like staying at other people's houses more than a day or two either (and ideally I wouldn't stay over anywhere unless I absolutely had to, due to distance from home).

3 days would be my absolute limit! I hate hosting, it's stressful. When my stepson is here for a week I am climbing the walls. I don't like having people in the house for too long, family or not.

The first year we moved into our own house DH's mum and sister came for Xmas as did my mum. Had everyone arrive on Xmas Eve. My mum had stipulated she would leave on Boxing Day as she was working the day after. DH's mum and sister made no such plan and when tackled actually said that they had planned on staying until after New Year. Tense conversation between me and DH culminated in him telling them that basically they had to go as we had plans. To add insult to injury DH's mum suddenly announced that she'd invited other relatives round to our house on Boxing Day and that we would give them afternoon tea.

Since then I lightheartedly but firmly stipulated that any Xmas stays would be a two day 'Turkey and Tinsel break' with guests either arriving on Xmas Eve or Xmas Morning with a max two night stay. Went down like a lead balloon with DH's mum and sister but hey ho. My mum was fine as she doesn't like staying anywhere for more than a night or two thankfully.

As we live in a small cottage now we limit guests to a one or two night stay. We've got a couple of hotels within 10 mins drive so anyone suggesting a longer stay are directed there.

TheLeadbetterLife · 07/01/2023 14:12

I'm counting down the minutes at this point. This week has seemed endless.

I feel guilty because they're lovely people, but I just can't handle it, and I'm terrible at making nice once I get into this mood. The small talk makes me want to scream.

How do pp who've put their foot down about this deal with the reaction from potential guests? Did you get any pushback?

My threshold for house guests is about 2-hours

Yes this! Why do guests expect you to be a flipping tour guide? They seem completely incapable of doing anything or entertaining themselves, I really really do not want to go the local tourist attraction I have seen multiple times, just go out for the day by yourselves 😠

The problem is that we no longer live in the UK, so when family and friends come and stay it often involves a flight. We do have a nice guest room and bathroom too, so it seems churlish to say they can only stay three days.

That said, some people want to come for a fortnight every year, which I think is unreasonable whichever way you look at it. We're only a short flight away, it's not like we're in Australia or something.

It appears that the ones who want to come for a fortnight are thinking of it as a fortnight's holiday, forgetting that actually they are imposing on your day-to-day life, and that while they are staying, it isn't your holiday as well. You still have to work and so on.

You're not running a B&B, and it is unfair of them to expect you to accommodate them for that long, however close a relative they are.

TheLeadbetterLife · 07/01/2023 14:44

Well exactly. The way I look at it is, when we lived in the UK, we were a three hour or so journey from these relatives. When they came to stay, or we visited them, it was never for more than a night or two at most.

Now the travel time is around double, including the flight time and airport faff, so how does that require a fortnight's stay?

" Guests, like fish, start to smell after three days ". Benjamin Franklin.

And like the decorations, I think they should be gone by 12th night.

Something needs to be said well before they book flights for next Christmas. Expectations need to be lowered.

spuddel · 07/01/2023 15:31

Can't imagine having guests for a month!

I often wonder the same thing op, do my guests not actually miss their own homes or the relative privacy of a hotel? And invariably the ones who stay too long and get on my nerves never return the invitation due to 'circumstances'.

TheLeadbetterLife · 07/01/2023 17:30

Actually in fairness the long-staying guests do extend the invitation the other way. We never go for more than two or three days though, because it’s just as stressful being a guest as being a host.

Wahey! Even adultish dc has left on holiday. We’ve been flat out since Thanksgiving(!) hosting and also had a wonderful week away after christmas and resulting unpacking/ processing. The house is quiet and tidy.

Intheroommadeasy · 07/01/2023 19:44

Guests for 7 days, love them but it's utterly exhausting

TrevorOptions · 07/01/2023 20:17

I’ve just said no to all overnight guests. Claiming house is too small. It is small but we have a small spare room but I just can’t deal with mornings and people in my face at 8am.

nope nope nope.

a week ?!? I would go insane.

op turn your spare room into an office. Or a hobby room / gym or say it has a leak. Start giving people the details of local hotels.

resipsa · 11/01/2023 23:40

My MIL is into Week 3 of 5 weeks. I cried in the car tonight as I just wanted to go home and relax.

momager1 · 12/01/2023 02:41

this is my nightmare. I love having guests for a night...maybe 2. We are moving from canada to the carribean in May and I already have people asking about our guest room. Funny enough, none of them ever visit in small town ontario. But NOW... omg...momager has a house in dominican republic. So the requests start. lol

BunchHarman · 12/01/2023 08:13

I love hosting. I do have a very large house though. We had 18 for a couple of weeks over Christmas and new year!
