Giving stuff away on facebook is a thankless pain in the arse

Not just facebook actually, on the local free sites too.

Trying to get rid of a play kitchen. It’s old but lots of life left. I just need it gone so I’ve put it up for free. Ad clearly states the town I live in and that I can not deliver, it’s collection only due to size of the item, measurements are also clearly stated.

None of the local playgroups want it, no one I know with children wants it.

So far I’ve had:

Three people over the weekend who said they were coming to collect, never turned up and have ghosted me when I’ve asked if they still wanted it.

Someone tuned up and was pissed off at me that it was too big to fit in their car (I told them the sizes again when they messaged me and told them that it didn’t come apart). They stormed out calling ME a time waster.

Can you deliver to X town please? - A one hour round trip.

Can you keep hold of it until my dds birthday in February, I’ve got no where to store it.

Can you post it by courier? (This was to be at my expense at the item was free, it’s almost the size of an actual fucking kitchen, there’s not a chance in hell).

And one of the scam ones telling me that dpd will deliver the cash - it’s free 🙄 Must have got a pissed scammer last night.

Lots of people asking if it’s still available and that’s the last you hear of them.

It’s just not worth it, is it?

The bloody thing is too big for my car or I would take it to a charity shop.

Many local charities will collect large items if you ring them

Mol1628 · 04/01/2023 12:23

No it’s not worth it.

Put it in your front garden with a free sign on it.

Oh God, I would where I lived before.

Sadly where I live now it would be chucked into the road by some arsehole.

Have you tried the Olio ap? I’ve found it pretty good when getting rid of old toys.

We tried to get rid of it that way before Christmas when we were clearing out a relatives furniture, the one place who collects in town wouldn’t take toy items.

No!

I’ve got it as well, I will put it on there, thank you!

Yes, time and time again this sort of thing happens. It actually seems to be better when you are selling stuff than giving it away so I often put a nominal cost on now. Also give people a time limit to reply or pick up.

YorkieTheRabbit · 04/01/2023 15:13

Ah I see, the British Heart Foundation only took furniture around here but the local hospice has a large furniture store but also collects to sell in the normal shops so anything from toys and books to clothes.

Kevinyoutwat · 04/01/2023 18:05

Oh for fucks sake!

So someone contacted me this afternoon wanting it. They turned up two hours ago and couldn’t fit in their car, they sat on the drive waiting for someone with a bigger car to turn up, that didn’t fit either. I’ve been out to see what they want to do and they don’t know. They are still here two hours later on the driveway. I’ve said do they zany to take it round the back, they said they are sorting it.

Good God!

We always put out front now with free. And a fb post saying its outside xyz address.

Everything is always gone within an hr or 2. Especially in summer.

NYresolutions23 · 04/01/2023 18:09

Canr they dismantle?

Polkadotpolkadot · 04/01/2023 18:11

So true, I've pretty much given up to be honest, it's always such hard work!

Kevinyoutwat · 04/01/2023 18:13

It’s quite an old little tykes kitchen, it’s probably too brittle. And it would be a ball ache.

I did tell them the exact measurements, that were on the add.

We live in an absolute dump. Someone would move it to the middle of the road for a laugh, or smash it to bits.

I totally agree. If you're giving it away for free people take the piss. I'd put it for sale for £5 on there and you may actually get people turning up.....in my experience anyway.

Hillrunning · 04/01/2023 18:24

It's a bit annoying but you want it gone, and have no means of getting rid of it yourself so I don't really see what you are complaining about. You say 'Not worth it' but it is because you don't have another option.

It’s semi lighthearted.

I was just having a moan about it.

In my experience, even if you put collection only, no time wasters and no holds, you will still get morons who don't read it.

I think most see the advert photo and click send message. I can tell most of the time when that's the case as on FB they click the message button and it sends you a message with automatically with "is this still available?" I can guarantee that when I say yes the next question will be "can you deliver/post/courier/carry it to me on silver platter via Sherpa a 4 day round trip". I immediately block people like that on principal.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 04/01/2023 18:29

@Kevinyoutwat If it's any consolation, I gave away a tumble dryer on FB Marketplace, and someone came to collect it in a wheelbarrow. He was genuinely surprised that it wouldn't fit.

YouJustDoYou · 04/01/2023 18:30

Oh god, I did this (clearly said pick up only) and gave up ever doing it again (also belonged to a local group offering some skills to people in need, same issue), the amount of choosing beggars was beyond belief (can you bring it to me? can you post it? Can you do it now? I want it in 3 weeks not now! I'm "ill", can you also pick up xyz from another seller a few miles from your house? etc). JUst donating straight to the charity shops from now on.

Kevinyoutwat · 04/01/2023 18:31

The person who was waiting with it seems to have given up now and has driven off.

I’ll have to stick it in the shed before some twat comes along and does something stupid with it. Thought I’d finally got shot of it then 🙄😆

Second Olio. I get rid of stuff so quickly on there and no time wasters allowed

Lozza70 · 04/01/2023 18:53

It’s thankless! No good deed goes unpunished as my Mum used to say…….

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/01/2023 18:59

Try a local school or nursery?
