Where do you buy music?

My New Year's resolution is to bring more music into my life.
I've just ripped my entire CD collection onto my laptop, and transferred to MP3 player. I never played the CDs, but now I can play random tracks on shuffle, and delete album tracks I don't like - so much more fun.

Where is the best place to buy songs or albums online, preferably wma format?
I am not interested in streaming, as I want to own the tracks and play them offline.

I suppose it's a bit like a kindle in that you don't own the books but you can read them.
Apart from being able to hear any music you could ever imagine the other big bonus to me is storage. Since getting a kindle I've got rid of all my books and bookcases and now I can also get rid of 50 years worth or records and CDs that no-one listens to. It's freed up space in my house and that's a bonus however big your home is.

I'm also old but Spotify has given me a new outlook on music. Yes I still listen to my old favourites, but I can have every track Leonard Cohen ever recorded in one playlist in one click. My DC are in their 20s and we share playlists so I'm finding music I love but would never have come across otherwise.

OP a quick solution would be to buy a cheap second hand iPod touch (or even iPad, depending on your budget and requirements) and host Spotify on that, plugged into your amp. You're not tied to it with your phone being attached and you've access to more music/podcasts etc than you have time to listen to.

If you go down the Apple hardware route, then you gain the option to download music to keep from iTunes.

I get you, OP - I just want to have tracks offline, whether on CD and/or on the computer/memory stick and know that they're there to play at any time. I don't want to have to stay subscribed to a service that 'holds' my choices for me, even if it's free.

I buy the odd CD these days, but am going to rip all of our collection one of these days. Usually, I just listen on YouTube and download them for later listening/in the car.

I just used a free app called 'FairStars' CD ripper - takes seconds for each CD. I did it while watching TV.

Many thanks to everyone who has replied with various suggestions. I have read them all carefully. So many options, but none of them the perfect solution (just like life really).

As I have just loaded about 100 CDs to my MP3 player, it will take me a while to listen to all of that, so there is no rush.

I just want the chart-toppers, the classics, the bangers, the choons, the pick of the pops, etc., from the last 7 or 8 decades. Add in the best of reggae, blues, jazz, folk, classical, etc. (I have eclectic tastes), and that is probably only a few tens of thousands of songs, maybe a few hundred thousand at most. I don't need 10 million songs, of which about 95% are mediocre at best. Nor do I need to explore new artists.

Say Spotify costs about the same as a CD each month, say £10 for ease. What if the platform goes bust after 20 years? Or I can no longer afford it? (Don't think it could never happen). I will have paid £2,400, and have nothing to show for it except the memory of 20 years of listening. If I buy CDs or online tracks, I could have 240 CD's worth, or about 3600 tracks, mine to keep.

I like the idea of buying a second-hand device to plug into the stereo that has internet capability - to stream music into the full-size speakers. Not as good as ownership, but maybe a good compromise.

I use Apple Music but it’s the same for me really. My mum uses Deezer which her partner chose because of the available songs? Not sure might have been to do with downloads etc. as he’s a but old school.

I still buy my CDs from Amazon, you also get a digital download when you buy the CD. We have old cars with CD players so makes sense to have physical CD.

I use mostly use Amazon music as the artists get more per stream than Spotify. Bandcamp aswell, if you buy on a Friday artists get 100% of money.

Although over last few years I have been buying more vinyl to play while working from home.

Thanks a lot for the tip - I'll check that one out!

Not wanting to derail, does anybody know of a good DVD ripper? One where you can just end up with one file you click on to play it (or one file for each episode), rather than numerous background system-type files? Free would be great, but I don't mind paying a reasonable price.
