Portion sizes in restaurants getting small!!!

SantaOnFanta · 03/01/2023 21:52

Am I just getting greedy lol or are portion sizes in restaurants really going down??

A pasta dinner no more than 7 mouthfuls.

A roast pork dinner which consisted of six small strips built up like a Jenga and one plate of veg to share with husband with his meal. £17.

Two burgers and one side of chips and drinks £53!

Anyone else noticing this?

I would defy anyone to say that the meal in your picture was a small portion @justasking111. You would have to be a manual labourer to feel hungry after that.

Well a picture can be deceiving. Small plate, artistic liberty 😅

justasking111 · 04/01/2023 20:38

20% VAT on top of price increases doesn't help either.

RampantIvy · 04/01/2023 20:40

A lamb shank is pretty sizeable, so it can't be that small.

DH and I used to go to a local Italian restaurant and take our 3 DC for tea on Saturdays sometimes. It was a special £14 for two courses including a drink and £6 for DC. So it cost us £46.
It now costs us £84 because prices have gone up to £20 each for us, not including the drink (another £7 each on top) and the DC meal has gone up to £10 each. The portions are definitely smaller.
We've gone for years - before we had DC- but won't be going again for Saturday tea. We might go just the two of us for a special meal but not just tea- can't be paying £84 for Saturday tea. Last Saturday DH made vegetable fajitas which were delicious and cost us about £12-13 including ice cream and a couple of beers.

Was surprised at the cost of a lamb shank in sauce wholesale price £7.77 per portion, add vegetables it explains why they're so expensive in restaurants

No decent place would buy a ready made lamb shank with sauce either so that's just the price for your below average chains.

😅😅 many top places use central kitchens now. Sous vide food are you going to sit at a table for the day while a chef marinates, slow cooks your lamb shank. Don't be daft

namechangeforthisoneeee · 04/01/2023 22:39

@justasking111 guess I'm used to smaller places that use local produce. Not your big "fancy" places which are clearly not fancy af all 😂😂

BradfordGirl · 04/01/2023 22:58

@justasking111 I know independent places that ask you to order dishes 24 hours before that need to be marinated and slow cooked for hours. Why would you have to sit at the table while that happens?
IME small local independent places always do the best food.

justasking111 · 04/01/2023 23:09

I prefer small places with small menus. Some folks want a huge menu to choose from though.

I find it hard to believe that these are “top places”.

Believe what you wish. It's an efficient use of chefs.

Food is now reflecting he actual cost of making it.... electricity to wages, etc

Someone mentioned calorie counts ... So that is what your portion actually is in calorie size. I don't think people recognise proper sizes a lot of the time.

MargaretMead · 15/07/2023 09:34

Restaurant costs have risen massively. What I’ve noticed is that the higher quality independent places are now serving mains at around the same price as the chain restaurants.

The chains are run by accountants, whereas the independent owners can tweak menus to save money and pass it onto customers.

Not in Pizza Express! I had a chicken pesto pasta dish & it was bottomless!!

ThisBluntDeer · 03/03/2025 17:40

My appetite is large.Frankly I would rather choose a dive to eat rather than a posh diner if it means I leave full up as long as the hygiene standards r good and the staff friendly. My husband doesn't have to take Me to a fine diner to make me feel classy
The value I receive comes from inside.External niceness is all wolves in sheep's clothing and deception.xx

Gwenhwyfar · 05/03/2025 12:45

Very good news if true. I find restaurant portions too large and there is an obesity crisis.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/03/2025 12:46

MissTrip82 · 04/01/2023 01:29

Really? You’re can’t finish a single course at any restaurant?

How extraordinary.

Restaurant portions are often too big and are obviously standardised so inevitably too big for some people.

RampantIvy · 05/03/2025 17:31

I generally find restaurant portions are bigger than what I would serve at home.

I am categorically not a competitive undereater at all BTW.
