How to split bill?

I received a £40 gift card for a restaurant/bar.

Was going to arrange dinner with either 1 or 2 other people. We usually split the bill equally. I assume the food bill would be around £60 PP, not including cocktails.

Would you spend the voucher on just your share, or would you spend the voucher on the entire bill so everyone pays less? £40 could cover a round of drinks (maybe 2 at a push!)

I would put it in to cover everyone if it is going to be less than that per person. So say bill is £120 I'll cover £40 and the others split the remainder. If it's say £6o oerperson I'm just covering my own bill and topping it up

I'd split the voucher and the final bill equally between all diners (assuming there isn't anyone on a lettuce leaf and glass of water in which case they should still get an equal share of the voucher and just put in up to the amount for their cheap meal+drink).

Split equally including the voucher or save the voucher for another visit

Is it the type of restaurant you'd all usually go to for type of food and price range? Or only so you can spend the voucher?

I would say so, although it’s more a special occasion restaurant. I personally go around twice a year but budget wise it’s similar to other restaurants we visit more frequently

£40 is towards your share and anyone who expects to benefit from your gift is a CF.

Tamarindtree · 03/01/2023 21:12

The voucher should be treated as cash and therefore only benefit you.

Tamarindtree · 03/01/2023 21:14

If you had a discount code, say for example for 20% then that could be used for the entire bill, but the gift card is to be benefitted by you and anyone disagreeing is being petty.

I'd spend it on just my share so bill comes - £180. Split three ways as usual = £60 each,
I pay my £60 using my voucher and twenty pounds on my credit card. Friends each pay their £60 share as they would normally.

If you'd received a £40 John Lewis voucher you wouldn't be sharing it three ways, you'd be treating yourself to something nice as the giver intended.

But, if you're feeling generous - then giving each of your friends £13 towards a special lunch is a nice thing to do.

It’s completely up to you. If it was me and I was arranging a dinner specifically because I had this voucher I would take it off the bill as a whole, split the rest. My friends would do the same (as the other person doesn’t get the choice of the restaurant), and the person without the voucher would cover the tip generously!

When bill comes and you are divvyying it up and say your share is £80 just put down voucher plus £40. Don’t make any announcement in advance. It’s just a substitute for cash
