Help with starting as self-employed

I've accepted a job as a domestic cleaner. Well I say accepted, I need to register as self employed and they find me the clients. I'd be looking at 12 hours a week in this role. I have another part time job as a food delivery driver (16 hours). Just looking for general advice really. Do I need to register straight away even though they've only got me 6 hours of work so far? Or do I need to state that it's going to be 12?

Also not sure what to do about self assessment. With both jobs together I'd qualify for paying tax but not with my self-employed one on its own.

I started today but I know self assessment is at end of Jan. Arrgh 👀 head a bit overwhelmed atm.

Your SE won’t be at the end of Jan.
The SE due at the end of this month are for May 2021 to April 2022.
Plus it doesn’t sound like you will actually be SE in this cleaning job unless you can turn down work and send someone else on your behalf amongst other things

Register as a sole trader now and file a tax return (after 5th April but before 31st of Jan 2024) to cover your earnings from now until 4th April.

Any work you do as a self employed person should be declared in the return. You dont declare money from an employed job where you have already paid tax but there is a section to list this paid employment.

The more paperwork you keep the easier it is.

You also need to set aside your tax in a separate account.

I wonder if it’s worth the hassle and better to be employed
